As home networks have increased in popularity, so has the wireless router. The rise of Wi-Fi has also caused the downfall of wired networks (in homes, at least), and many consumers now see Ethernet cords as being rather old-fashioned – that is, if they see them at all. Some newer computer models, like Apple’s MacBook Air, don’t even have ports for Ethernet connections anymore. The blistering connection speeds offered by today’s Wi-Fi standards do make wired networks appear a bit of a relic, but appearances can sometimes be deceiving. Though Wi-Fi has improved significantly over the last five years, it...

Intel's latest server processor isn't just about servers, it's about networking, too. Intel officially launched the Xeon E5 CPU this week, providing performance gains of us much as 80 percent over Intel's previous generation server chips. The E5 includes a new Intel Data Direct I/O system which will help to accelerate networking. The other networking component is a new 10 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) LAN On Motherboard (LOM) capability with the Intel X540 controller that provides an integrated 10Gbase-T solution. All together, Intel is aiming to lower the cost of 10 gigabit networking while accelerating overall networking performance. "As we scale...

Inventors of the MRI, the Ethernet, the LP record and a popular weedkiller are among 18 people picked for induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The 2007 class of inductees was to be announced at an event Thursday on Capitol Hill. The honorees are joining luminaries such as Thomas Edison, Velcro inventor George de Mestral and Charles Goodyear, developer of vulcanized rubber. "Some of these inventors ... have literally changed the way we live our lives," said Rini Paiva, spokeswoman for the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation. But, she added, "they are not household names." Among the...

I have a network that has not been working. My computer, the main computer works well through it and connects up to the cable without problem. Computer number two just throws up these days but lets forget it for now. Triage works in computers as well as medicine. Computer number three wants to hook up to the internet and it appears that it sends packets to the router but cannot receive. there is a Via RhineII fast internet adapter that needs attention. Device does not start (Code 10) I am assuming that this is the card where the usb port...

Thirty years of 'talking' computers The original diagram laying out ethernet's basic form Some of the computer technology that lets you read this story is 30 years old this weekend. In 1973 data was passed over a computer networking technology known as ethernet for the first time. The feat was accomplished by Bob Metcalfe and David Boggs who at the time were researchers at the legendary Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. Three decades on and ethernet is used to connect millions of computers together and to link those machines to the internet. Ether flyerBob Metcalfe began working on ways to...
