Saturday Night Live's effort to give Kamala Harris some free publicity backfired spectacularly when NBC was forced to provide Donald Trump equal airtime. And the former president used that time to his full advantage. * * * NBC, backed into a corner over the blatant FCC violation, was forced to throw the GOP nominee a bone. That bone came in the form of two ad spots during Sunday's NASCAR coverage, together with another aired during Sunday Night Football. Those are two very pricey timeslots for ads to run, with the Daily Mail estimating each to have a price tag in...

MSNBC and CNN refused to air former President Donald Trump’s Republican Iowa caucus victory speech Monday evening, while airing fellow candidates’ speeches. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow announced on-air that Trump had just began giving his speech but that the network decided not to air it because it did not want to knowingly broadcast “untrue things.” She said: At this point in the evening, the projected winner of the Iowa caucuses has just started giving his victory speech. We will keep an eye on that as it happens. We will let you know if there’s any news made in that speech if...

Many cities across the country are displaying “Black Lives Matter” murals, but one city has done away with its mural after a Trump supporter asked to paint “MAGA 2020” on the same street. Redwood City, California, resident Dan Pease got permission from city officials to paint the “Black Lives Matter” mural as part of a Fourth of July public art installation. The city even gave him paint to do the project. “Because we were using the poster board paint that would eventually deteriorate over time, my understanding from them was that the mural would last as long as the paint...

How to get Black Lives Matter paintings off the street. In Redwood City, California, an inspired attorney had a novel approach to removing a city-funded mural on the street stating, “Black Lives Matter.” Maria Rutenburg told Redwood City that if it was going to turn the pavement into a public forum, people with alternative views should also get free speech access. Rutenburg then asked the city to paint ‘MAGA 2020’ next to black lives matter. The city quickly decided to remove the BLM graffiti.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama has been given a show by PBS starting next week, the taxpayer funded network announced Friday. The timing of the announcement comes after Democrats marked $75 million for PBS’s parent the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in the coronavirus relief bill that passed at the end of March. Newsbusters reported the $75 million is on top of the $465 million given CPB in the current year’s federal budget, which is an increase of $20 million over the previous year.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi released a statement Monday night in response to the news that television networks plan to televise President Donald Trump’s Oval Office speech Tuesday night. “Now that the television networks have decided to air the president’s address, which if his past statements are any indication will be full of malice and misinformation, Democrats must immediately be given equal airtime,” their statement read in part.

[clip] The right wants regulation too, but of a very different kind. Multiple right-wing commentators have called for Google and Facebook, whose market share eclipses old 20th-century monopolies like Standard Oil and the Bell System, to be regulated like utilities. The impetus is the threat of political bias from companies that now have more influence over the flow of news and information than any other company in history. Facebook, through a recent change to its news feed algorithm, threatens to undercut the success of new media outlets. Google, by tweaking its search results, could swing an election anywhere in the...

President-elect Trump weighed in on this weekend's 'Saturday Night Live' show that had Alec Baldwin playing him, tweeting , "It is a totally one-sided, biased show - nothing funny at all. Equal time for us?" Saturday's show was marked by the return of Alec Baldwin, who played candidate Donald Trump before the election, in his debut as the president-elect. The episode's cold open (below, in its entirety) -- set at Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey, where Trump is holding meetings this weekend -- kicked off with Baldwin's Trump telling Kate McKinnon's Kellyanne Conway, Trump's campaign manager, that he...

Hillary Clinton isn't leaving anything on the table in her effort to win Florida – engaging in an uninhibited appearance on the Spanish language channel Univision where she appeared on 'El Gordo y la Flaca,' practiced Spanish, danced with the portly host, and got serenaded by a Mariachi band. 'What is better than this?' Clinton asked when the spectacle was complete. On the show, she met with Bronx-born singer Prince Royce – but also was offered cookies by the little person who is one of the regulars on the Spanish language show. Clinton, who downed shots at a bar during...

Stations must provide other candidates airtime on request NBC affiliates may want to get their stop watches out when Donald Trump hosts Saturday Night Live. Per FCC rules, qualified candidate appearances on non-news broadcasts are subject to the "equal opportunities" requirement, which requires TV stations who give airtime to one candidate to offer other qualified candidates for the same office an equivalent amount of airtime on the station. NBC could ask the FCC for a ruling that the show was a bona fide news broadcast or news interview program or documentary, and thus exempt from the requirement, but that would...

Federal Elections Commission Chairman Lee Goodman said he believes there are “impulses in government every day,” (he specifically said “the left,)” to “look into the editorial decisions of conservative publishers.” Goodman is vowing to keep the media and internet free,” but his chairmanship expires in December 2014. Graphic_Free_Speech_1 “The right has begun to break the left’s media monopoly, particularly through new media outlets like the internet, and I sense that some on the left are starting to rethink the breadth of the media exemption and internet communications,” he added. Noting the success of sites like the Drudge Report, Goodman said...

You've probably heard that Cosmos, the new version starring Neil deGrasse Tyson, is causing waves because it's on FOX, and it actually talks about (gasp!) evolution. But this week, Christians upped the ante on crazy by demanding "equal time" for creationists. You know, because they need things to be "balanced." In his typically incisive style, deGrasse explained one reason why that's a silly idea. “You don’t talk about the spherical Earth with NASA, and then say let’s give equal time to the flat Earthers..."

John Kerry has waded into the media waters and now wants the news to cut out conservatives he doesn’t agree with. During a discussion of the debt deal and the economy on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Friday, the current Massachusetts senator and former presidential candidate lambasted the Tea Party and conservatives and the idea that they should be given “equal time” in the media. According to him, their ideas are so whacky that they don’t deserve air time: “And I have to tell you, I say this to you politely. The media in America has a bigger responsibility than it’s...

Viacom networks MTV, BET and CMT are giving an hour of free air time to President Obama less than three weeks before the midterm elections. The so-called “A Conversation with President Obama” will be live and commercial-free on six Viacom networks at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The networks will not give equal time to a Republican before the election, according to a spokeswoman. MTV denies that the Obama hour of TV is political, despite the timing, weeks before the midterm elections.

The Fairness Doctrine Is NOT the Equal Time Rule and Stop Saying It Is or I Will Demand Equal Time for the Sake of Fairness Posted by Anthony Sacramone on February 14, 2009 Over at Get Religion, Mollie Hemingway parses a recent news story about a discussion of the Fairness Doctrine at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention. Tangentially related is the tendency to confuse that doctrine with the Equal Time Rule, which has to do with elections and candidates’ having access to, you guessed it, equal time. Former President Bill Clinton recently opined about his desire to see the Fairness...

As each days passes it seems like more and more liberals come out in favor of the Fairness Doctrine. Bill Clinton is the latest example. He told Politico there needs to be, "more balance in the programs or have some opportunity for people to offer countervailing opinions." Initially as a conservative I was against this idea, but I have been caught up recently in the hope, change, and bipartisan spirit emanating out of Washington, DC. So in the spirit of fairness I propose the fairness doctrine be reinstated as follows.

WND is announcing the launch of an online petition to oppose the "un-American" speech limits that Rush Limbaugh and other commentators could face should some interests in Congress succeed in re-adopting the so-called "Fairness Doctrine." The petition calls on all three branches of government to protect the speech freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment. It urges Congress to "immediately drop all legislative efforts to re-impose the so-called 'Fairness Doctrine' and that the president of the United States veto any so-called 'Fairness Doctrine' legislation approved by Congress and that the U.S. Supreme Court overturn as unconstitutional any so-called 'Fairness Doctrine' legislation...
