Actor an environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio has pledged to divest from his fossil fuel holdings and increase his investment in renewable energy companies, an environmental group announced Tuesday. DiCaprio attended a meeting of the Divest-Invest Coalition in New York City Tuesday, where he pledged to end his personal and his Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation’s investments in the fossil fuel sector. “Climate change is severely impacting the health of our planet and all of its inhabitants, and we must transition to a clean energy economy that does not rely on fossil fuels, the main driver of this global problem.” the Departed actor...

I suppose that everyone knows that by 2014 we will no longer be able to purchase incandescent light bulbs in this country. Compact fluorescent bulbs will be what you must purchase. So, I decided to do some “investigative” reporting. The compact fluorescents cost ten times more than an incandescent bulb, but are alleged to last ten times longer than the old fashioned bulbs, so, I guess, that’s a wash. We are told that these CFL’s will not only reduce our carbon footprint, but will also reduce our electric bills. Indeed, the package of a General Electric CFL bulb I looked...

California Portland Cement Co. had planned to build more plants this year but put its expansion on hold as it awaits a decision by state lawmakers that the company says could force it to cut production. Cement manufacturers represent just one of several industries that would be required to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases they emit under a bill that would make California the first state in the nation to impose such regulations on businesses. The bill has set off a sharp debate in California over the need to balance environmental goals with the concerns of businesses that say...

Why would an energy-craving nation (the U.S.) that also demands a pristine environment put the kibosh on a limitless form of power (nuclear energy) that produces no air pollution and no emissions environmentalists claim cause global warming? It stems essentially from two massively-publicized incidents that plague our imagination: Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979 and especially Chernobyl in Ukraine. Nobody was even injured at TMI, but Chernobyl was a disaster of epic proportions. Or was it? For the answer go back to 1986 in the former Soviet Union, a regime in which worker and public safety mattered zilch. A...

A tax on supermarket shopping bags in Britain seems certain because a report to the Government on Ireland's recent experiment is understood to recommend a levy of up to 10p. A 10p tax on each disposable supermarket bag is likely to be among the first environmental policies recommended by Michael Meacher when he returns from the Earth Summit. Shoppers in Ireland have reduced the number of bags they have been using by 90 per cent since the tax of 15 cents (10p) per bag was introduced in March. Most Irish shoppers now keep their bags and reuse them. In Britain,...
