I suppose that everyone knows that by 2014 we will no longer be able to purchase incandescent light bulbs in this country. Compact fluorescent bulbs will be what you must purchase. So, I decided to do some investigative reporting.
The compact fluorescents cost ten times more than an incandescent bulb, but are alleged to last ten times longer than the old fashioned bulbs, so, I guess, thats a wash. We are told that these CFLs will not only reduce our carbon footprint, but will also reduce our electric bills. Indeed, the package of a General Electric CFL bulb I looked at recently proudly proclaimed that the bulb would shave $35 off your electric bill over the life time of the bulb.
There are a few drawbacks though. CFLs contain mercury, which is toxic. So, if one breaks, the EPA tells us that we should immediately open a window, and leave the room for 15 minutes lest we breath in the mercury. The above link gives an assortment of other helpful hints on what you should do next.

“last ten times longer”
Bullcrap. These things are always dying wherever I install them. It’s a lie.
No doubt about it! I use some “rough service” incandescent bulbs. They last longer.

I believe CFLs are designed to drive the epiclectic insane and encourage the broader population to give up reading. They are in a word, horrible. Horrible performance for a horrible price.
They’re going to have to create the Light Bulb Police if they expect that I’ll be doing anything other than throwing burned out “new” bulbs in the trash just like the old ones. And of course, being the left wing commie scum that they are, they never met a Civilian National Security Force they didn’t like.
Also, incandescents are now appearing on the market in odd wattages like 95w. It looks like a way of legally skirting the mandated “energy savings” because these odd wattages will have no history to compare to.
I have six mercury thermometers I bought off of ebay. Tried the new ones that poke in your ear and it showed I was either dead or had 107 degree fever. You could pretty much aim it until you got a temp. your liked. I would love to see a study of how much mercury was released into pristine mother earth from broken thermometers compared to projected mercury released from these bulbs when we are 100% converted.
Incandescent light bulbs are perfectly efficient as long as you use the heat they release, and they are much greener since they do not contain toxic raw materials.
Moreover, incandescent light bulbs inform you about the state of the grid, if there is flick, low voltage, commutations by your utility, etc.
Call me conspiracy theorist, but I suspect LED technology has left some people having big CFL plants not paid yet.
Clean the wax out and try again? :-)
The CFL’s we have become familiar with are crap. Terrible on the eyes to read by, and NO they don’t last longer that we can tell as we have many of each at work about the ranch depending on what we want to use them for.
As outside porch lights that stay on extended hours they do well, and as night light situations in the den where the one light stays on 24/7/365 it does well, but in situations that the light bulbs are turned off, and on often they are less than adequate, and our experience is the incandescent bulbs are superior.
The incandescent bulbs provide better reading light for our comfort, and no discernible difference in useage costs over the long run, and the incandescent bulbs don’t come with a warning about mercury, and hazardous exposure instructions.
This is another law that needs to be reversed along with about everything the Leftistsphere has promoted from their isle of insanity.
I can’t even find out what fluorescent size replaces a 40 watt incandescent. Also, which fluorescent is safe in a three-way lamp.
And worst of all, we have only one time a year to unload the new bulbs, and it’s a long drive from where I live. Hopeless.
If I put these new bulbs in the ceiling fans in the bedrooms, and they break over the bedding, what must be done? Burn the $300 quilt? Call HAZMAT and they will do something about it? This seems very series....
I use the light bulbs from all my “bright idea” captions...
Yes
I've already started hording... lightbulbs and of course plastic shopping bags too. ;-)
EH?
I have been hoarding big screen TV's, SUV's and McDonald's fries...
The ones made in China die fast. But the ones made in certain other countries do last a lot longer, they’re just hard to find anymore.
Is it really true that incandescents will be illegal in 2014 (or perhaps the sale of them will be illegal)?
