  • 5 Songs that Sound Like They Were Made by The Beatles, but Weren’t

When the Beatles arrived on the scene in the United States in 1964, many have said it was like a Wizard of Oz moment; before them, popular music was black and white but after, it was technicolor. Yes, the former Mop Tops changed everything when it came to pop and rock and roll—and the band continued to flip the script, evolving from simple tunes to very intricate, sweeping offerings on later albums. But given their enormous musical impact, it was inevitable some bands along the way were going to imitate The Beatles’ sound. Imitation, after all, is the highest form...

I think this whole concert is available on youtube. Phenomenal production. Great songs. As good as the music is, to watch the audience take that stroll with them - while singing every word - makes it that much better.

Here's a 29 minute 57 second video of the Shindig Halloween Show from 1965. The only copy available available has a missing five minute segment that had four cut songs including Boris Karloff singing The Monster Mash! The missing audio segment was recorded by Lionelatwill in 1965, when he was only a kid, (a smart kid) and those missing minutes were edited in to the video from the 13:17 to 19:15 section. I edited some of the show's other video clips and then synched to Lionelatwil's audio. Here's the closest thing to the complete episode available. Enjoy the blast from...

Recorded in 1976 at Musicland, Munich, West Germany, the song features a dramatic orchestral opening before transforming into an upbeat rock song. Although never released as a single, the song was a fan favorite and was performed live at every ELO concert including the Zoom tour in 2001. When inducting ELO into the Rock and Hall of Fame, Dhani Harrison made several references to the song, saying "Someone had actually thrown me down a line, and my life was changed." Louis Clark, the string arranger and conductor who enriched Electric Light Orchestra's music in the '70s and '80s, reportedly died Saturday, Feb. 12, at the age of 73. The musician's wife, Gloria, announced the news on Facebook. Though a cause of death has not been revealed, Clark had apparently been "ill for many months." "He passed very peacefully surrounded by love," she wrote. "This morning he watched premier league soccer and listened to the Beatles, two things he loved. This afternoon I told him I loved him, he said I love you too, and we kissed. He was gone five...

Saw ELO at Denver Pepsi Center last Wednesday, 8,8,2018. Wow, show looked to n=be sold out. The wife and I had great seats. Section BBB, row 7. That is the center of the floor, row 7. It was amazing. Around 20 songs and I knew them all. It has been 35 years since ELO played in the USA and I was there. They have more dates before their last date in London. Two nights at Madison Square Gardens in NYC. Maybe 8 shows remaining. I highly recommend.

A rural northwest Iowa man who suffers from Parkinson’s disease has filed a federal lawsuit claiming that he was brutally pummeled by a SWAT team after a relative made false harassment allegations against him Instead of speaking with the retaliatory relative, the sheriff’s department in Pottawattamie County, Iowa (pop. 92,913) sent close to a dozen members of its SWAT team to the home of John Hytrek. Hytrek, 52, was working on a tractor in his driveway when the heavily armed policemen jumped out of a van. He had previously warned the relative, who sports a prior conviction for uttering false...

How do you turn a fine, upstanding, conscientious and goal-driven young man into a terrorist? By fiat. That is, by treating him like a terrorist. That is, treating him very badly. Drop the whole weight of the law on him . . . for holding the wrong opinions. What opinions? you ask. Revolutionary Islam? White supremacism? Armed revolution? No. Self-defense. And now you may have figured out the problem. The hatred of self-defense, the absolute fear of it — the quivering, poltroonish over-reaction to the very idea — is common amongst today’s politicians, educators and even some benighted, cowardly law...

A founding member of ELO has been killed in a freak accident when a giant hay bale rolled out of a field and landed on his van. Cellist Mike Edwards died instantly when the 50-stone cylindrical bale careered down a slope, flipped 15ft over a hedge and smashed on to the roof of his van. Mr Edwards, 62, was known for unconventional cello playing including plucking the strings with an orange or grapefruit and his bizarre customs which became a major ingredient of ELO, the Electric Light Orchestra.

And while Paul Rudd and Jason Segel may love the band, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sure doesn't.</p> <p>When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame holds its annual induction ceremony April 4, there once again won’t be any progressive rock artists amongst its five honorees. The Rock Hall’s snubbing of the once-popular genre hasn’t gone unnoticed by its supporters.</p>
  • Light Pollution (If you think it's a joke, think again. The movement seeks to change laws)

Light Pollution At the beginning of the 21st century, humanity is losing a valuable and beautiful part of its heritage. For the first time in history, poorly designed and badly aimed lighting is denying vast numbers of humanity a view of the night sky. Urban sky glow now pollutes nearly all of Britain's night skies. As amateur astronomers we have a responsibility to guard our night time environment against light pollution. What is light pollution?  Light pollution is the popular name for sky glow - a brightening of the night sky caused by the scattering of artificial light by aerosol...
