Electric Light Orchestra - "Tightrope" (1976)
Youtube ^ | 6/6/2013 | ELO

Posted on 09/07/2021 4:55:21 PM PDT by simpson96

Recorded in 1976 at Musicland, Munich, West Germany, the song features a dramatic orchestral opening before transforming into an upbeat rock song. Although never released as a single, the song was a fan favorite and was performed live at every ELO concert including the Zoom tour in 2001. When inducting ELO into the Rock and Hall of Fame, Dhani Harrison made several references to the song, saying "Someone had actually thrown me down a line, and my life was changed."

I have loved ELO since first hearing
“I Can’t Get It Out Of My Head”. 1974
In fact, my Girlfriend at that time, gave me the album as a Prom Gift. I think I gave her Candy.

They opened their world tour in 1978 in Omaha. Had a huge spaceship. Great concert.

The weakest Wilbury. Everything he touches sounds the same. He even turned Bob Dylan into an orchestral player.

A light orchestra is a small orchestra, with maybe a couple violins and cellos. That’s what ELO is, except with electric violins, cellos, and guitars.

Everything he touches sounds the same. He even turned Bob Dylan into an orchestral player.

He did okay with Del Shannon on his last album (Rock On!), and some interesting work with him in the '70s (Deadly Game, Cry Baby Cry). Others don't work (Help Me, Distant Ghost). Jeff's affinity for falsetto harmonies works well with Del. "Rock On!" was not Del's best work, and the finished product wasn't going to be as much of a "comeback" as the early '80s "Drop Down and Get Me" with Tom Petty was, but it didn't all sound the same, and certainly not like an orchestral work.

Disagree. Even if you don’t like his singing his career producing and engineering albums for other artists stands up with the best of them.

Rock On! sounds almost exactly like the Wilburys.

No it’s not his singing that bothers me, I actually do like some ELO stuff. It is his producing that bothers me. IMO, a good producer brings out the best of talent to create their own distinct sound. It seems Jeff has too heavy of a personal influence on whatever he produces. Though I’ll concede in most cases that is probably why they hired him.

That said, he is an incredible sound engineer. No doubt about that.

I haven’t heard enough of the Wilburys to make the comparison. What little I heard had a George Harrison vibe.
