Abstract: Here are two commonly held moral views. First, we must save strangers’ lives, at least if we can do so easily: you would be required to rescue a child drowning in a pond even if it will ruin your expensive suit. Second, it is wrong to eat meat because of the suffering caused to animals in factory farms. Many accept both simultaneously—Peter Singer is the pre-eminent example. I point out that these two beliefs are in a sharp and seemingly unrecognised tension and may even be incompatible. It seems universally accepted that doing or allowing a harm is permissible—and...

More than 750 northern tidewater gobies were plucked from a lagoon ravaged by the Palisades fire and transferred to aquariums. A more complicated mission to rescue endangered steelhead trout from the same watershed is slated move forward Thursday. Watersheds seared by fire can take years to recover, experts say. The rescue team donned waders and marched into a murky Malibu lagoon scorched by the Palisades fire. Their mission: Save the lives of northern tidewater gobies, a tiny endangered fish. The destructive wildfire had stripped the slopes of the nearby Santa Monica Mountains and now rain could send a tremendous amount...

In a nutshell * Scientists have developed a plant-based cheese using a specific pea protein and oil blend (25% coconut oil, 75% sunflower oil) that matches the texture and melting properties of dairy cheese while containing less saturated fat. * The breakthrough challenges the common belief that high saturated fat content is necessary for proper cheese texture, as the new formulation achieved similar firmness (80 Newtons) to versions made with 100% coconut oil. * The research demonstrates that carefully selected plant proteins can create healthier cheese alternatives without sacrificing the stretchy, melty qualities consumers expect, potentially revolutionizing the plant-based dairy...

The Caveman Diet, also known as the Paleo Diet, is a weight-loss craze where calorie-counters pick foods they think early humans may have eaten. For most followers, this means a meat-heavy diet. But a new study suggests that if you truly want to eat like a caveman, you should be steering clear of red meat. Contrary to popular belief, researchers from Bar-Ilan University say that early humans were not solely focused on animal protein. Instead, cavemen were mostly vegetarians whose diets featured plant-based foods including acorns, cereals, legumes, and aquatic plants. 'This discovery underscores the importance of plant foods in...

People who eat just two servings of red meat per week may have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to people who eat fewer servings, and the risk increases with greater consumption, according to a new study led by researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. They also found that replacing red meat with healthy plant-based protein sources, such as nuts and legumes, or modest amounts of dairy foods, was associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. The study was published on Thursday, October 19, in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. “Our findings...

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is urging the White House to swap chicken eggs for potatoes at their annual Easter Egg Roll this year. The controversial organization wrote in a letter to First Lady Jill Biden that it wants to “suggest an appealing way to modernize the White House Easter Egg Roll,” which is set for April 1st on the South Lawn. […] … PETA President Ingrid Newkirk states … a ”potato roll” would not “exploit any sentient beings and would encourage empathy and kindness to animals while supporting potato farmers in the U.S.” …

Plant-based meat substitute maker Beyond Meat said its revenue plunged 30.5% in the second quarter as consumer demand for its burgers, sausages and other products fell despite price cuts. That’s down from the $375 million to $415 million it forecast at the end of the first quarter. Beyond Meat’s shares fell 10% in after-hours trading Monday. Arnold Schwarzenegger frequently does not fit the preconceived notion of a vegan that non-vegans have. Without a doubt, the former bodybuilder, actor, and governor of California dispels the fallacies surrounding veganism. Even while many well-known Hollywood vegans appear to partially fit the picture, Arnold Schwarzenegger clearly defies the stereotypes associated with veganism. But the reason he went vegan was that eating a diet high in plants had helped him. It has helped him dramatically decrease his cholesterol during the previous five years. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veganism is a result of his choice to become more health conscious While fans will most...

Actor James Cromwell went to great lengths while joining PETA's protest against Starbucks on Tuesday. In a video shared by the animal rights organization, the Succession star, 82, superglued his hand to a counter in a New York City Starbucks to protest the coffee chain's "senseless" upcharge for Vegan milk. "There's no reason for it except greed," Cromwell says in part in a video shared by PETA on Facebook, later reading a letter and asking, "Will you stop charging more for vegan milk? When will you stop raking in huge profits while customers, animals, and the environment suffer? When you...

A study has revealed new insights into how a diet rich in red meat increases risk for cardiovascular disease. In previous studies, Dr. Hazen found that a byproduct that forms when gut bacteria digest certain nutrients abundant in red meat and other animal products—called TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide)—increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. In 2018, Dr. Hazen published results showing that dietary carnitine is converted into TMAO in the gut through a two-step, two microbe process. An intermediary metabolite in this process is a molecule called γBB (gamma-butyrobetaine). According to Dr. Hazen, multiple gut microbes can convert dietary carnitine...

These included the DASH diet, Mediterranean, Vegetarian, Vegan, Nordic, high fiber, and high fruit and vegetables.
