My mother and sister [at separate locations] cannot connect through Earthlink. Modem connects, but cannot access any web site. I work with computers, have cleared their caches, run anti-malware and anti-virus, changed DNS addresses, etc. Nothing seems to work. 2 strange things, though. I can grab updates for the anti-virus software and other programs that have new updates, but this is not through a browser. Also, from my location, I can long distance dial their access numbers, get the modem connected, AND I can get to web pages. Any thoughts?

PHILADELPHIA — It was hailed as Internet for the masses when Philadelphia officials announced plans in 2005 to erect the largest municipal Wi-Fi grid in the country, stretching wireless access over 135 square miles with the hope of bringing free or low-cost service to all residents, especially the poor. Municipal officials in Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and 10 other major cities, as well as dozens of smaller towns, quickly said they would match Philadelphia’s plans. But the excited momentum has sputtered to a standstill, tripped up by unrealistic ambitions and technological glitches. The conclusion that such ventures would not be...

...In van Orden v. Perry, the Court allowed a six-foot granite monument to the Ten Commandments on the grounds of the Texas capitol. But in McCreary County v. ACLU of Kentucky, it decided that a display of framed copies of the Ten Commandments inside two Kentucky courthouses was going too far. ...Reading through the majority opinions, it seems that the difference boils down to such "context" dependent issues as the fact that the granite monument was old -- it had been there since 1961 -- while the Kentucky commandments were of newer vintage and therefore possibly a product of the...

Everyone, Yesterday I received an e-mail, supposedly from Earthlink Billing, supposedly about problems with my account. I found it suspicious. It had an attachment, which I did not open. It contained a link, to a webpage which caused all sorts of security warnings to pop up on my screen. I contacted Earthlink. They say this is a fraudulent message. I figure y'all might find a warning useful. Earthlink: Your hard drive may be spying on youEarthLink has a word for all of you spam-hating, pop-up-blasting, virus-fearing brethren -- spyware. And you should be scared, computer users, real scared. Experts say as many as 90 percent of all Internet surfers have picked up one brand or another of this soaring spyware, also known as scumware, skunkware and malware. That proportion seems awfully high, but at least a large majority of Internet-connected computer users harbor one or another of the thousands of spyware varieties. EarthLink has more than a passing interest. Last Wednesday, it added to its Internet software...

The ISP is suing to recover an estimated $5 million Story by Paul Roberts, IDG News Service AUGUST 28, 2003 ( IDG NEWS SERVICE ) - EarthLink Inc. has filed suit against two spam e-mail rings with operations in the U.S. and Canada. The Atlanta Internet service provider said on Tuesday that it is suing to recover an estimated $5 million in lost employee productivity and Internet bandwidth that it claims was spent managing more than 250 million e-mail messages sent from e-mail addresses on its network, according to Pete Wellborn, outside legal counsel for EarthLink. The suit targets two...

A district court in Atlanta has awarded EarthLink $16 million in damages against a New York state man that it alleged used illegal means to send out more than 825 million unsolicited e-mail messages, commonly referred to as spam. The court also permanently banned the defendant from spamming and from a host of related activities. These include distributing mass e-mail software and selling e-mail addresses, according to Pete Wellborn, legal counsel for EarthLink and the company's lead litigator in the case. In a statement issued Wednesday morning, EarthLink said that a ring led by Howard Carmack obtained Internet accounts by...

Everybody hates pop-ups -- you know, those extra ads that unexpectedly appear in new windows on top of or behind the window where you are surfing on almost every site except for PBS. Well maybe not EVERYBODY hates them. In a Jupiter-MediaMetrix survey last year, only 41 percent of respondents were against pop-ups, though if they had flipped the survey around and asked how many respondents LIKED pop-ups, my guess is the number would have been near zero. And even 41 percent is too many consumers to annoy at one sitting. So pop-ups are bad, which means that getting rid...
