My mother and sister [at separate locations] cannot connect through Earthlink. Modem connects, but cannot access any web site.
I work with computers, have cleared their caches, run anti-malware and anti-virus, changed DNS addresses, etc. Nothing seems to work.
2 strange things, though. I can grab updates for the anti-virus software and other programs that have new updates, but this is not through a browser. Also, from my location, I can long distance dial their access numbers, get the modem connected, AND I can get to web pages.
Any thoughts?
I do not know how the internet works, or what the problem was, but I did have trouble earlier tonight. Only some sites were affected.
What did Earthlink’s tech support say when you called them?
Apparently others around Wash DC having problems.

EarthLink? Modem?
I am stunned to have been transported back to 1998.
Before I return to 2014, here are a few tips:
1. Buy all the Apple Stock you can.
Actually, that is the only tip you need.
Earthlink wanted me to do what I already had done. Absolutely useless. I think they have a big problem, but will not admit it.
What gets me is that I can access Earthlink via the same telephone number from long distance and I can get into the Internet [web pages].
Theoretically, I should not be abel to do that if they [my Mom and Sis] can’t do it.
Yeah - I left a comment at that web site. Figured I would post here to see if anyone had any thoughts ...
I keep telling my Mom and Sis to go broadband - even offered to pay for it. They are absolutely opposed to it. Don’t have cable either. Use Tracfones only for emergency use.
That link you posted was me.
i have a backup dialup account with earthlink.
Can you connect to your back-up right now?
So you answered your own question.
People voluntarily still use dial-up?
For real?
It’s like watching a B&W tube TV compared to an LED/LCD TV
I didn’t know Earthlink was still around.
Is AOL still in business?
Sorry, I know I’m not any help.
I’m sure you tried renewing your IP Address.
I’ve been dealing with an apparent DNS problem of theirs for the last week or so on their DSL service. They don’t seem to be able to get a reference beyond the first page of a site. Solution has been escape/f5 repeated for as many layers deep as the page is.
Oh.. just noticed reference to dialup. Ran into that a while back, it was related to EL asking for password and not getting it.
“Is AOL still in business?”
I can’t be any help to the main question of this thread, but I can tell you that A LOT of people still have @aol email addys.
“People voluntarily still use dial-up?”
There are many people who have no interest in using the Internet until and unless they are dragged kicking and screaming up to a browser they don’t understand.
Then there are the millions of Internet users whose only access to the Internet is by dial-up telephone modems or a satellite link whose cost they consider too expensive for what little use they have for the Internet. These people are often do not have broadband services in their rural areas, and they have no cell phone towers within range of their homes.

What about a link that is possibly not in their dns cache.
