SALEM – A Derry woman faces multiple charges after attacking a Canobie Lake Park security guard early yesterday morning, police said. The security guard was at his post near the amusement park's service gate at 12:02 p.m. when a man ran up to the guard shack and handed over a set of car keys, police said. Before running off, the man told the guard to call police because the woman in the car was drunk, authorities said.

Raleigh, N.C. — A Winston Salem woman was killed Friday night in a wreck at Lead Mine and Strickland roads in Raleigh. Elena Bright Shapiro, 20, of 28 Cascade Ave. in Winston Salem, was driving a Hyundai at about 8:30 p.m. when the vehicle was struck from behind by a Mercedes on Strickland Road, authorities said. Raymond Dwight Cook, 40, of 10516 Beckridge Lane in Raleigh, was driving the Mercedes at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred, authorities said.

The Long Island mom behind the wheel in a fiery wrong-way crash that killed her and seven others along a New York state highway was reportedly drunk and had high levels of marijuana in her system, authorities said Tuesday. Police filed intoxication manslaughter charges Sunday against a driver who lost control of his car while using a cell phone, plunging the vehicle into a rain-filled ditch and killing five children inside. Chanton Jenkins, 32, was in police custody facing four counts of intoxication manslaughter, one charge for each of the children found dead so far, said Houston police spokesman Kese Smith. Elizabeth Shelton, 21, filed a lawsuit in Houston in December against the truck driver that she accidentally rear-ended in a 2007 crash, while she was intoxicated, and in which her boyfriend was killed. Though she was convicted of manslaughter, she is now suing for $20,000 damage to her Lexus SUV and for "pain and suffering," basing her claim on the fact that the blameless driver she hit was uninsured.
