Sen. Rand Paul Again Slams Trump Over Strikes On Alleged Drug Boats Off Venezuela: 'A Lot Of Reasons To Be Worried'
Latin Times ^ | 10/22/2025

"When we declare war is supposed to be done by Congress. It's not supposed to be done willy nilly," Paul added

Republican Sen. Rand Paul again slammed President Donald Trump over the administration's continued strikes against alleged drug boats off Venezuela, reiterating that any armed conflict should be approved by Congress.

Speaking with British journalist Piers Morgan, Paul rejected the administration's claim that the strikes were targeting smugglers carrying different drugs, including fentanyl.

"There is no fentanyl made in Venezuela. Not just a little bit, there's none being made. These are outboard boats that, in order for them to get to Miami, would have to stop and refuel 20 times, We don't just summarily execute people." Paul said.

"It's all likely going to Trinidad and Tobago. There are a lot of reasons to be worried about this. Number one is the broader principle of when can you kill people indiscriminately when there's war. That's why when we declare war is supposed to be done by Congress. It's not supposed to be done willy nilly. When there's war you just kill people in the war zone, there are rules of engagement," Paul added.

He concluded by saying that "interdicting drugs has always been an anti crime activity where we don't just summarily execute people, we actually present evidence and convict them."

Paul is joining a bill introduced by Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine, which will force a vote to stop Trump from unilaterally declaring war on the South American country. NPR detailed that the Upper House will have to vote after a 10-day waiting period.

Paul addressed the move in a social media publication, claiming "it's imperative that we make it clear that war powers reside with Congress, not the president."

Trump has lashed back at Paul in response. He recently dedicated him a social media post, asking "Whatever happened to 'Senator' Rand Paul?"

"He was never great, but he went really BAD! I got him elected, TWOCE (in the Great Commonwealth of Kentucky!), but he just never votes positively for the Republican Party. He's a nasty liddle' guy, much like 'Congressman' Thomas Massie, aka Rand Paul Jr., also of Kentucky (which I won three times, in massive landslides!), a sick Wacko, who refuses to vote for our great Republican Party, MAGA, or America First. It's really weird!!!"

Congress will never declare war against the people that fund them.

It's not a war. We are fighting criminals.

Rand Paul is a worrier... he could care less about America and Americans.

OTOH, President Trump is a WARRIOR... he cares deeply about America and Americans. MAGA!!!

More and more, it looks like Rand Paul is on the take. Why should he care that enemy combatants are getting blown up?

A lot of reasons to be worried.

That's what the top drug lords say lately. Maybe put off some of the boat shipments for a while.

Approximately 100,000 drug overdoses by Americans last year.

72,776 deaths caused by synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl last year.

He’s now spoke about this more than he spoke about Joe Biden’s failing mind in four years of senile Joe’s rule.

After the Easter Bunny and Joe repeatedly speaking to Dead world leaders.

Long past time for Rand to go. He literally serves no purpose and has entered Mitt territory with his stupidity. His support for the rights of narco terrorists is Chris Van Hollen level stupid.

Really don’t care, if they are drug boats, that stuff may make the rounds to other places, but those organizations being hurt doesn’t bother me at all. Some of their stuff makes it here. If it hampers the drug gangs/orgs in any way, I am for it. Further would be great training for the troops at the same time doing something objectively useful.

So, not with Rand on this. This is where libertarianism mentality fails.

Bush 41 went tp war against Panama without any Congressional notification, let alone approval. When he did notify Congress he stressed that Noriega was transhipping drugs from Colombia to US. Mounting an amphibious invasion of a sovereign country without a declaration of war is somewhat morecdangerous than blowing up a few speed boats.

If Paul is siding up with Tim Kaine then he is no good. What the heck. That’s a stab in the back if you ask me.

It has been done willy nilly for decades now. The last time Congress formally declared war was the day after the Japanese Empire bombed Pearl Harbor. As much as I respect Rand, it's very late in the game to start worrying about this now.

I’d prefer Paul be more concerned about the thousands of American deaths caused by the narco drugs.

I’d also prefer people didn’t use the drugs...but that’s a heavy lift. Democrats don’t care about drug violence & deaths and the national media mocks any “war on drugs.” We can’t even stop state sale of federally illegal drugs.

dangerous drugs simply HAVE to be interdicted. there are thousands and thousands of addicts and people dying from them on the streets of America

it is tragic in a number of our larger cities especially,

absulutely tragic and it really can’t be remedied on the demand/consumer/addict side very well, sorry about that. the only way to proceed is to stop or substantially prevent the supply of dangerous drugs now.

I’ve seen photos. They’re floating gas cans. There are exactly 3 things on board those boats: drugs, gas and minimal crew. And that’s not even factoring in cargo transfer to similar vehicles in a relay system. Pony express but with fentanyl and cocaine.
