Inflation Cools More Than Expected, No Signs of Tariff Pressure
Breitbart ^ | 24 Oct 2025 | JOHN CARNEY

Consumer prices rose less than expected in September, government data showed Friday, clearing the path for further rate cuts from the Federal Reserve and suggesting that tariffs are not weighing on household budgets.

The consumer price index increased 0.3 percent last month, down from the 0.4 percent in August. Economists had forecast a 0.4 percent increase.

Compared with a year ago, consumer prices are up 3.0 percent, slightly below the 3.1 percent forecast.

Core prices, a metric that excludes food and energy prices, rose 0.2 percent, below the estimate for 0.3 percent. Over the past 12 months, core prices are up 3.0 percent.

Food inflation, which soared in August, cooled in September. The index for grocery prices climbed 0.3 percent over the month, down from the 0.6 percent increase in August. Compared with a year ago, grocery prices are up 2.7 percent. The prices for dining out rose just 0.1 percent, a slowdown from the 0.3 percent increase in August. Compared with a year ago, restaurant prices are up 3.7 percent.

Energy prices were a major source of inflation in the month, rising 1.5 percent in September and 2.8 percent from a year ago. Gasoline prices climbed 4.1 percent in September but are down 0.5 percent from a year ago.

Most economists don’t understand basic economics.

Assuming that competition is strong, all items will be priced at the most consumers are willing to pay to begin with. So tariffs will only result in manufactures making less margin, because consumers were already paying as much for any given product as they were willing to.

I keep seeing anti-Trump news about the devastation caused by tariffs, the persistent inflation, the massive unemployment, and the total collapse of the economy all across the country. And of course, the complete refusal of any Republican to follow the law or to adhere to any curt rulings.

Maybe our side is crazy. Maybe their side is crazy. But right now, Republicans and Democrats are not sharing the same reality.

That’s because President Trump stopped the USAID embezzlement racket.

And firing 900,000 bureaucrats helps, too.

Considering your tagline and the common definition of a sociopath — wouldn’t it be easier to just say the Democrat side is crazy? There’s no “maybe” about it.

We had enormous inflation a couple of years ago with no tariffs.

When inflation surges again, and it will (at 3% it’s now 50% above the Fed’s 2% target) it may be blamed on tariffs but there might be zero reason to do so.

We had an oil price decline recently, which has now reversed. Depending on the sampling week, we may see the effect of one of these in next month’s numbers. Probably the decline was during the CPI sampling week. Then the following month it will resume the upward CPI tick.

“Gasoline prices climbed 4.1 percent in September but are down 0.5 percent from a year ago”

Uh, gas prices in places like Oklahoma and Texas are in the $2+ range for unleaded regular. Link for the usual gang of unbelievers: https://www.gasbuddy.com/home?search=tulsa%2C+oklahoma&fuel=1&method=all&maxAge=0

That’s 1990s numbers. If oil followed general inflation that number s/b like 2.5-3 times higher.

Mr. Powell the Big Bad DC Lawyuh might wanna knock a few basis points off the vigorish rate and give everyone a bit of a break.

I notice growing admission in the financial community that the tariffs haven’t made inflation worse.

Increased prices are not necessarily caused by inflation.

Inflation is caused by government creation of more money.

Prices go up, in general, if more money is created than productivity produced product for less.

The Biden administration created enormous amounts of money out of thin air. Of course they caused inflation.

Prices can fall for some items, even if inflation is high.

Gas prices in socal are double that at best and usually over $5 per gallon. No surprise with a Democrat supermajority in the legislature and Newsom as governor.

A local gas station has a very large sign stating that California has the highest fuel taxes in the nation. Again no surprise.

Tariff policy was only started in September, and finalized tariffs with China are still ongoing. We always give tax breaks and such time to work in the economy, it would make sense to give time to see how tariffs play out.

As of now, companies have been able to buy ahead to stockpile inventory in preparation of future tariffs. We should get a clearer picture once tariffs have been around for several quarters.

Interesting factoid:

Number of refineries in California in 1980: 50

Number of refineries in California in 2025: 13, and going down

Detecting a pattern here...

I love president Trump but prices at the grocery are going thru the roof right now a you can’t throw shade on that when everybody is paying for that.

I agree, and utility rate increases are even worse. I feel the government reported inflation rate of 3% is understated.
