Alzheimer’s disease, long seen as a disorder of the aging brain, may actually begin in an unexpected place: the mouth.Researchers reported evidence that a bacterium commonly associated with chronic gum disease could play a direct role in the development of Alzheimer’s. The study, published in Science Advances, details how Porphyromonas gingivalis, the pathogen behind periodontitis, was detected in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. The findings come from an international team of scientists that included Jan Potempa, a microbiologist at the University of Louisville. Potempa said the research offers some of the strongest evidence yet linking gum infection to Alzheimer’s pathology,...

People with missing teeth may be able to grow new ones, say Japanese dentists testing a pioneering drug they hope will offer an alternative to dentures and implants. Unlike reptiles and fish, which usually replace their fangs on a regular basis, it is widely accepted that humans and most other mammals only grow two sets of teeth. But hidden underneath our gums are the dormant buds of a third generation, according to Katsu Takahashi, head of oral surgery at the Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital in Osaka. His team launched clinical trials at Kyoto University Hospital in October, administering an...

WASHINGTON (AP) — If you have stained or chipped teeth, you might be considering veneers, customized teeth coverings that can restore a photogenic smile without more extensive dental work. But dentists warn that these pricey cosmetic enhancements are at the center of a worrisome online trend: unlicensed practitioners without proper training or supervision offering low-cost veneers. These self-described “veneer techs” often promote themselves on Instagram and TikTok, promising a full set of veneers for less than half of what dentists typically charge. Some also market their own training courses and certifications for people looking to get into the business. It’s...

I've noticed that for quite a while, there has been a series of television commercials for Sensodyne toothpaste where a female dentist promotes the benefits of using this product. There have been about 6-7 of these commercials. What's interesting is that only female dentists (or actors depicting a dentist) are featured wearing a white lab coat and all appear to be from a minority group e.g. black, Hispanic, Asian. I have never seen a male dentist or a white female dentist featured in these ads. I suppose this is part of "woke" and DIE. Anyone else have another explanation?

I just don't want this to happen to anyone else ... Traci Parker left Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego on Tuesday after an eight-day stay. She was forced to undergo surgery for a severe infection after what should have been a routine dental visit. ... her doctor didn't listen to her concerns. "It's been really hard on me," Parker said. "If I had not gotten treated when I did, I could have gotten septic." Her ordeal started back on August 3 when she went in for the first of two appointments to get a crown. She was in pain...

Dentists Warn Of Harmful ‘Mask Mouth’ Disease Periodontal disease caused by extended wearing of face masks is just one more health problem to add to the growing list of adverse effects. This can lead to strokes and increased risk of heart attacks. ⃠TN Editor Some bad breath just can’t be covered up. Now that dentists have reopened their doors, they’re having patients show up with a nasty set of symptoms, which the doctors have dubbed “mask mouth.” The new oral hygiene issue — caused by, you guessed it, wearing a mask all the time to prevent the spread of...

April 17 (UPI) -- In one of the largest federal crackdowns on opioids yet, prosecutors said in an indictment Wednesday investigators uncovered a vast illegal prescription scheme in which physicians traded painkillers for sex and money. The federal indictment involves 350,000 illegal prescriptions in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama and West Virginia. "That is the equivalent of one opioid dose for every man, woman and child in the five states in the region that we've been targeting," Brian Benczkowski, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department, told The Washington Post. "If these medical professionals behave like drug dealers, you can rest...

LAS VEGAS - Charges were dropped in court Monday against four dentists who were accused of rape against a woman at a Las Vegas hotel in July, KSNV reported. Ali Badkoobehi and brothers Poria Edalat, Saman Edalat and Sina Edalat had been charged with sex assault, conspiracy to commit sex assault and first-degree kidnapping, the television station reported. However, prosecutors dropped charges during a hearing that lasted about 30 seconds Monday, the Las Vegas Journal-Review reported. “After review of the facts of the case, it was clear that the allegations were completely fabricated,” lawyers for the men wrote in a...

I had to shorten the title so it's misleading Dentists can SMELL your fear: Study warns their ability to detect patients' anxiety may cause them to make more mistakesStudy of dental students found that dentists can smell when a patient is anxious It found this can make them more likely to make mistakes and perform poorly Students donated two shirts each, one worn during stress and one during calm Performed procedures on mannequins wearing the shirts, and they did significantly worse on the dummies wearing the 'stressed' clothingFear of the dentist is a real thing - but it may cause...

How sharper than a serpent's tooth to have a despotic pediatric dentist. Parents who decide, for whatever reason, that they don't like their children's oral care provider should be forewarned. Empowered by government "mandatory reporter" laws, dental offices are now using their authority to threaten families with child abuse charges if they don't comply with the cavity police. Mom Trey Hoyumpa shared a letter last week on Facebook from a dental office called Smiles 4 Keeps in Bartonsville, Pennsylvania. It informed her that if she did not make a dental appointment for "regular professional cleanings" for her child, she could...

A progressive and often fatal lung disease killed dentists at a much faster rate than that of the general population at a Virginia hospital over the past two decades, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC reported that idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis affected eight male dentists and a dental technician out of 900 patients studied, Newsweek reported. Although the dentists only represented 1 percent of the number with the disease, only 0.038 percent of people in the U.S. are dentists. Seven of the patients studied had already died of the disease, which causes...

Researchers recently discovered certain drugs, including one developed to treat Alzheimer’s, stimulate innate self-repair mechanismsFor dentists, a cavity is a conundrum—in order to save the tooth they must further damage it. Currently, the primary way to treat a cavity is to excavate the decay and the surrounding area before filling the resulting crater with a durable surrogate material such as metal, plastic or glass cement. But what if instead of drilling holes into teeth and patching them up with synthetic fillers, dentists could coax our pearly whites to regrow themselves? Recently, Paul Sharpe, a bioengineer at King’s College London, and...

Michigan appears to be about average in access to dental care. There are about 7,700 dentists in the state and over 10,000 dental hygienists. In 2011, there were 6.2 dentists per 10,000 people, exactly the national average. But there is a concerning trend: Michigan’s dentist population skews older than average and the state may be facing a dentist shortage in the near future. Results from a 2011 survey of Michigan dentists reveals the problem. At that time, 37 percent of dentists were between 55 and 64 and another 15 percent were over 65. This means that over half the dentists...

I was huddled in a Connecticut legislative hearing room on a chilly spring morning three years ago, awaiting my chance to testify about a proposal to over-regulate e-cigarettes. I’m a big fan of innovation, so I’m always eager to speak out against entrenched interests seeking to stifle progress with regulations designed to kill improvements in our health. Proponents of more regulation regularly use scare tactics, shoddy science and false allegations that people like me are against “all regulation.” The Public Health Committee hearing room in Hartford was packed with people on both sides of the divide, waiting to address a...

Root canals are always fun, right? In reality, word that you need a root canal is some of the worst news most people get at the dentist. Whenever your dentist tells you that's the next procedure you're going have to go through, two things are clear beyond the pain you're about to endure: One, that your throbbing will finally soon go away, and the second is that the tooth that's getting the root canal is dead. However, researchers have come up with a new kind of biomaterial that not only encourages the natural regeneration of teeth, but also might eliminate...

For years we have known that the claim under Obamacare, “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan,” was false. We have also known that the claim under Obamacare, “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor,” was false. But what we didn’t know was that under Obamacare, “If you need a doctor, you may have to drive more than 100 miles to find a doctor.” I noticed in my new Anthem monthly premium under Obamacare that I was required to pay a separate monthly charge for dental insurance for my two teenage children (I also...

A new chemical could make human teeth 'cavity proof' - and do away with the need for visits to the dentists forever. The molecule has been called 'Keep 32' - after the 32 teeth in a human mouth. The chemical was designed by dentists in Chile, and wipes out all the bacteria that cause cavities in just 60 seconds in tests. The chemical could be added to any current dental care product, turning toothpaste, mouthwash and chewing gum into 'super cleansers' that could get rid of the underlying cause of tooth decay. The chemical targets 'streptococcus mutans', the bacteria that...

Just a day after Halloween two Pennsylvania dentists are offering a candy buyback program to save the teeth of young trick-or-treaters and boost the morale of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dentists Nalin and Arpan Patel, of Fairless Hills near Philadelphia, say they will pay $1 a pound (0.45 kg) to parents and children who turn in excess candy collected on Halloween. The proceeds will be sent to U.S. troops serving in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
