Once-powerful lobbyist Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal charges of conspiracy, tax evasion and mail fraud, agreeing to cooperate in an influence-peddling investigation that threatens powerful members of Congress. In a heavily scripted court appearance, Abramoff agreed with U.S. District Court Judge Ellen Huvelle when she said he had engaged in a conspiracy involving "corruption of public officials." The lobbyist also agreed when she said he and others had engaged in a scheme to provide campaign contributions, trips and other items "in exchange for certain official acts." "Words will not ever be able to express my sorrow and my...

Mark's Yuletide Movie Vault CHRISTMAS AT WAR As is traditional, I'm pleased to offer my annual round-up of great Christmas movie moments. This year, it seems appropriate to present a seasonal selection with a military connection, in honour of our boys fighting overseas. True, if you're Canadian, British or a citizen of most other western countries, an alarming number of those boys seem to be chaps from West Bromwich or Toronto fighting for the other side, but maybe these recommended highlights from the Great Satan’s cultural imperialism division will urge the lads on to even more glorious martyrhood. Have yourself...

What's the deal with these riots in Sydney? You switch on the television and there's scenes of urban conflagration and you think, "Hang on, I saw this story last month." But no. They were French riots. These are Australian riots. Entirely different. The French riots were perpetrated by - what's the word? - "youths". The Australian riots were perpetrated by "white youths". Same age cohort, but adjectivally enhanced. And, being "white youths", they thus offered "a chilling glimpse into the darker corners of Australian society", as Nick Squires put it last week, "with thousands of white youths rampaging through a...

Who says the next Liberal prime minister needs to be a Canadian? Or an earthling? -------------------------- I see the Hon. Paul Hellyer, privy councillor and veteran of the Pearson/Trudeau cabinets, is calling on Canada to reach out to "ethical EU societies." Well, good luck finding any. Whoops, my mistake. The former minister of national defence is, in fact, calling on Canada to reach out to "ethical ET societies"--as in Extra Terrestrial. "UFOs," he says, "are as real as the airplanes that fly over your head." And, given that it's mostly Air Canada flying over our heads, they've probably got a...

14 December 2005 It was only 30 degrees at high noon in Fayetteville today with a steady breeze, but a few loyal Freepers turned out at KFC on Owen Drive to defend our carnivorous culture against the anti-animal activists from PETA. I (cf_river_rat) showed up before eleven o’clock, just as the PAID Peta deceivers were unloading their costumes and props. I went inside the restaurant and heard the employees discussing the Colonel-criticizers, who were gearing up in plain view through the window. The most notable quote overheard was “Don’t they (Peta) realize how pathetic they look out there?”I found the...

Under scrutiny from a congressional committee, Gov. Kathleen Blanco and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin defended their Hurricane Katrina evacuation decisions — as Republican lawmakers questioned Wednesday why thousands of people were left stranded in New Orleans without transportation as the storm barreled toward Louisiana. Blanco, in often tense exchanges with committee members, said the mass movement of citizens was one of the most successful evacuations in Louisiana's history, saving more than a million people from harm and Katrina's devastating flooding. The Democratic governor told a U.S. House committee investigating the government's response to the hurricane that mandatory evacuations were...

The four-part Iraq speech cycle on which the president has embarked, and that culminated yesterday in his remarks before the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, may well mark a turning in his public leadership of the war. His arguments on the war, and his assertions about what is happening on the ground and what is desired there, were more comprehensive, seemingly more candid, and thus more persuasive than he has been in the past 12 months. Coupled with today's voting it may mark a real turning point. One of the things I think the president communicated most effectively, if mostly...

WASHINGTON -- All's well, Senator Byron Dorgan of the great state of North Dakota has done come clean. Senator Dorgan is the vice chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee. In that capacity he accepted $67,000 in contributions from Indian tribes represented by the recently indicted Jack Abramoff, a fabulous fixer here in the capital of the Free World. Abramoff, a Republican, has obviously been an equal-opportunity fixer, and apparently Dorgan was not above accepting his help, though Dorgan claims he never met the rogue and never backed any of his programs knowingly. Now there is an adverb to contemplate, "knowingly."...
