When it ended with the United States’ first gold in the sport at about 4:15 a.m. Eastern (6:15 p.m. in Korea), more than 77,000 people were streaming the event through NBC’s Olympics website. How many were watching on television on NBCSN? It ended so late that data will not be available until Sunday for the 3 to 4:15 a.m. ET portion of the telecast. But an average of 1.58 million viewers were watching from 1:30 to 3 a.m., a remarkable figure given the hour, the sport and the channel.

The American men have won the Olympic gold medal in curling in a decisive upset of Sweden. John Shuster skipped the United States to a 10-7 victory on Saturday for only the second curling medal in U.S. history. Shuster was part of the other one, too, as the lead thrower on Pete Fenson's bronze-medal team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The Americans received a good-luck call from actor Mr. T before the match. The King of Sweden was in attendance, as was U.S. presidential daughter Ivanka Trump.

The astonishing number is reportedly 10,000 more than the number of condoms distributed to athletes during the previous Winter Olympics held in Sochi, Russia. In fact, it breaks the record of the most number of condoms prepared for all participants in the history of Winter Olympics. According to the outlet, the amount will be allotted to 2,925 athletes representing 90 countries that will stay in the Olympic Village. That means each athlete gets approximately 37 condoms for the duration of the event, which will run from February 9 to February 25. To put it into perspective, that’s about 2.5 condoms...

Don’t bother telling Joe Rockenbach your curling jokes. He’s heard them all. As president of his local curling club, Rockenbach has listened to people tell him that curling is not a real sport. Or about how curlers must be skilled house cleaners because their sport involves sweeping. Those comments used to irk Rockenbach, a 37-year-old Philadelphia native, but he’s seen the game humble enough people that now the slights slide right off. “Almost anybody who comes into it with the attitude of, ‘This is nothing, I got this,’ when they get off the ice, [they say], ‘this was way different...

Is that a bar fight? A Nascar race? An unusually aggressive pep rally? No — It’s Olympic curling! And there is screaming. So much screaming. Why? Well, it’s simply how teammates communicate with each other as they guide the stones, sweep by sweep, to the bulls-eye. But, for some, that's not immediately apparent: How do people understand curling? Like actually... What is it? Why are they screaming? Are those swiffers? Aren't they cold in tshirts? — Jennie McGowan (@jenniemac44) February 16, 2014 To understand the method behind the mayhem, one must first know the rules of curling. For starters, players...

(((Chaos at MSNBC))) While the Olympics continue in Vancouver, we’re hearing that things continue to fall apart at “The Place for Politics.” Despite having Olympic lead-ins to their prime-time line-up, ratings continue to be abysmal. Keith the Stalker has not been able to get out of his ratings slump for almost a year, and his bizarre personal behavior has begun to worry some NBC execs. Nobody knows when or if he will actually even show up to host his own show for one thing.

Canada beat the U.S. in curling Monday, officially killing the American team's hopes of making the medal podium in a second straight Games. The news came as little surprise to many people—least of all the U.S. Curling team. "We never really got on one path," says Rick Patzke, the chief operating officer for USA Curling, who said there was never any cohesive plan in place to win and that the training ahead of these Games was essentially a write-off. "There wasn't total buy-in," he says. By the time the Olympics came around, Mr. Patzke adds, USA Curling was resigned to...

The 41-year-old physicist, whose job entailed running experiments for the National Research Council, had just finished some work for a researcher overseas and left his findings on his desk, to be mailed later. Sometime that night or the next morning, he took his garbage bins outside for pickup. Then, he vanished without a trace. When he didn't show up for work for several days and...
