At the end of this year, I will retire from the United States Senate. As my twenty-four years in Congress draw to a close, I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Senator. This has been an extraordinary privilege. During my career, I have always been inspired by the strength shown by people through even our darkest days; and this past Friday, December 14th, was certainly one of the darkest in Connecticut’s history. But even in the wake of the terrible tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, we remain as united by our resolve...

Former Democrat Joe Lieberman used his last speech on the U.S. Senate floor on Wednesday to call for bipartisanship and get in a last dig over the controversial result of the 2000 election, when he was the Democratic vice presidential nominee. Lieberman, 70, announced in January 2011 that he would retire when his fourth term ends next month rather than seek re-election. He reflected on his career in remarks that lasted for about 20 minutes, recounting landmarks in his career and changes in society since he became a U.S. senator in January 1989. “When I started here in the Senate,...

WATERBURY -- When William Jefferson Clinton was running for president 20 years ago, a young Chris Murphy was preparing to cast his first presidential vote. Sunday afternoon Clinton brought his political star power to Waterbury's Palace Theater to help Congressman Murphy in the latter's tough campaign for the U.S. Senate."This man has worked his heart out in Congress," Clinton said at the close of his nearly half-hour speech. "If you want a better economic plan, budget plan, health care plan, education plan, if you want a better future orientation, don't be fooled."

Democratic Congressman Chris Murphy and Republican businesswoman Linda McMahon are in a near tie following their final debate in Connecticut’s testy U.S. Senate race. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Connecticut Voters shows Murphy with 48% support to McMahon’s 47%. Two percent (2%) like some other candidate, and three percent (3%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.) This race now moves back from Leans Democrat to a Toss-Up

Hartford -- A new TV ad by Republican U.S. Senate nominee Linda McMahon gleefully points out a gaffe in her opponent’s latest ad that confused a diesel submarine of the Royal Norwegian Navy with a Groton-built sub. In the ad by the Democrat Chris Murphy, a narrator tells how “the Connecticut jobs Chris Murphy’s helped create...launched new subs in Groton.” Meanwhile, a short video clip of a surfaced submarine flashes on the screen. McMahon’s new ad does a close-up of the sub’s flag, revealing that it is indeed a Norwegian flag and not a U.S. vessel. Her campaign staff announced...

Republican hopes to regain a majority in the Senate were given a boost by a recent U.S. Chamber of Commerce poll that show the tight race is led by their candidate. Politico reports that Republican Linda McMahon leads Democrat Chris Murphy by 3 points in the Connecticut Senate race, 42 to 39, based on the Chamber poll of 600 likely voters. About 14 percent of poll participants claimed to remain undecided.

Last week, Ramussen showed Republican nominee Linda McMahon with a 3-point edge over her Democratic opponent in the US Senate race in Connecticut, Rep. Chris Murphy, 49/46. Six days later, Quinnipiac confirms that McMahon has a slight edge over Murphy — and in fact finds the exact same result: Connecticut likely voters put Republican former wrestling executive Linda McMahon on the right side of a 49-46 percent too-close-to-call U.S. Senate race against Democratic U.S. Rep. Christopher Murphy, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. …"The poll is good news for Linda McMahon. In our first likely voter poll in...

State Republican Party Chairman Jerry Labriola said he’s making the argument to Republican officials at the national convention in Florida that Connecticut could be a possible win for presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Labriola told The Associated Press Monday that he’s been busy pointing out how President Barack Obama’s popularity in this Democratic-leaning state has waned and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon is running a strong campaign against Democratic Rep. Chris Murphy. That makes it worthwhile, Labriola said, for Romney’s campaign to dedicate some resources in Connecticut, such as a visit from Romney or his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan,...

Polls closed in Connecticut at 8 p.m. as voters cast ballots in the state's primary elections Tuesday. The Associated Press delcared Linda McMahon the winner of the GOP Senate race over Chris Shays about 40 minutes after the polls closed. Elections officials said turnout appears to be on track to hit 25 percent to 30 percent as Republicans and Democrats picked their candidates for the November general election. Hotly contested races for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives dominate Tuesday's ballots. Many polling places saw a slow stream of voters. Secretary of the State's office spokesman Av Harris said...

President Barack Obama will attend two fundraisers Monday in Connecticut, a state where he is facing an alarming decline in both political contributions and in some recent polling. Obama will head to the Stamford Marriott Hotel for a $500-per-person reception first. Then, he will be whisked off to the home of film producer Harvey Weinstein, where tickets to the dinner start at $35,800 per person. With the two fundraisers, Obama aims to close the wide gap between Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney in the Constitution state. Backed by a surge of Wall Street support, Romney has more than...

Former Democratic vice presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman says he’s not endorsing anyone – Republican or Democrat – for president in November. "I'm going to try to stay out of this one," Lieberman told Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday." Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut who caucuses with Democrats, famously endorsed his friend Republican John McCain over Barack Obama in the 2008 election. Wallace joked that that endorsement "didn't work out so well the last time." "I'm not running for re-election," Lieberman countered. "I'm enjoying not being involved in the nastiness of campaigning in America these days." Lieberman...

Joe Lieberman essentially has two options for 2012: Retire or become a Republican. The Connecticut senator and Democratic exile hasn't made up his mind whether to seek a fifth term, Lieberman and those close to him say. But if he does, the GOP ticket appears to offer his best shot at reelection. "That's his only hope," said John Olsen, president of the Connecticut AFL-CIO and a former state Democratic chairman. Even that, Olsen and others involved in Connecticut politics say, looks like a long shot. But no other avenue appears to be open to the 68-year-old Lieberman, who won a...

Senator Joe Lieberman told Eyewitness News 3 that it is possible that he could run as a “good old-fashioned New England Republican” in 2012. Lieberman says he was kicked out of the Democratic party in the 2006 primary after his stance on the Iraq War. For the record, Joe Lieberman was right on Iraq. The surge was a huge success and today Iraq is continuing to take steps on its path towards democracy… no thanks to the cut-and-run democrats and the state-run media who did everything they could to impede success in this front against Al-Qaeda and radical Islam.
