LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Researchers have detected a variant of coronavirus, first found in South America, in wastewater in southern Nevada, suggesting it is spreading in the community. Scientists at UNLV have found the Lambda variant, or C.37, in samples, Dr. Edwin Oh, an associate professor at the school’s Neurogenetics and Precision Medicine Lab, told the I-Team. Southern Nevada Water Authority scientists take samples from wastewater to see how much coronavirus is in our sewer system. Oh and other researchers analyze the samples, which help public health leaders find spikes and clusters before they can be identified through traditional testing...

Vaccines aren’t 100% effective, so some people will be vulnerable to the virus even after receiving two shotsAs the Delta variant of the coronavirus surges through the U.K., almost half of the country’s recent Covid-19 deaths are of people who have been vaccinated. But doctors and scientists aren’t sounding the alarm about the apparently high proportion of deaths among the vaccinated population. On the contrary, they say the figures so far offer reassurance that vaccines offer substantial protection against the variant, particularly after two doses. Delta, first identified in India, has since spread to at least 85 countries, including the...

I’m gonna be a dick today, because that’s a personal choice. It’s the middle of June and the COVID-19 vaccine is available (and free!) to anyone in the United States over the age of 12. This is a miracle. If you’re fully vaccinated like I am, you can throw parties now. You can travel. You can eat out. You don’t have to quarantine at home, counting toilet paper rolls and making hatch marks on your bedroom wall and wondering when you’ll be free of this bloody pandemic. It’s over for you. You won. You could even celebrate by going to...

Joshua Garza had a chance to get vaccinated against COVID-19 in January but he passed it up, thinking he didn't really need it. Now, the 43-year-old Texan is hoping to inspire others to get the shot after he became so ill following his COVID-19 diagnosis that he needed a rare double lung transplant to survive. "COVID ended up attacking my lungs," Garza, of Sugarland, told ABC News. After testing positive for COVID-19 in late January, Garza's health deteriorated rapidly. On Feb. 2, when he ended up falling while trying to walk, his wife called for an ambulance to take him...

PORTLAND (WGME) -- Eight Mainers have died with COVID-19 after being fully vaccinated, according to the Maine CDC. While it's a rare occurrence, it can leave families in shock and heartbroken. Eager and ready for normalcy, Arthur Mitchell got his second dose of the Moderna vaccine on March 8. “Counted out his two weeks to be fully vaccinated, was very excited about that,” daughter Margaret Staggs said. Staggs says once the family was fully vaccinated, they finally relaxed after a year of restrictions. “We probably all took a deep breath and let our guard down a little bit,” Staggs said....

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- The Orange County Coroner's office is investigating the death of a woman who died just days after she received her second dose of the Moderna vaccine. The family says the grandmother was healthy before she got her shot, and that her sudden death came as a shock. A conversation with staff at the Orange County Coroner's office about Griselda Flores' death, raised red flags for her son Richard Cardenas and the family. "They made it seem like this was not the first call that they had," Cardenas said. Assistant Chief Deputy Coroner Brad Olsen says...

Trujillo had previously shared social media content that appeared to reject the COVID vaccine. A Facebook profile photo updated in early May said "I have an immune system," a common refrain among those eschewing pandemic-era precautionary measures. In late April, Trujillo's profile picture bore a banner that read "I don't care if you've had your vaccine."

A coroner will consider if the cause of BBC presenter Lisa Shaw's death might have been complicated by her having had the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine. Her family said the 44-year-old was treated for blood clots days after her first jab. She died on Friday. An interim fact-of-death certificate lists the vaccine as one of the possible factors being considered. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said vaccine benefits exceed risks for most people. The BBC has seen the interim fact-of-death certificate issued by Newcastle's senior coroner Karen Dilks.
