Roaring inflation is tanking Americans' confidence in the economy.. U.S. consumer confidence tanked in early June, reaching the lowest level ever recorded as soaring inflation batters Americans' budgets and fuels concerns for the economy at large. The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index released Friday shows the index plunged to 50 this month, a 14.4% drop from May and the lowest reading since the survey began in the late 1970s. ... The survey indicated declines in every component, reflecting a bleak vision from respondents: The year-ahead outlook tumbled 24%, while Americans' assessments of their personal financial situations worsened by 20%....
  • More On Fed’s Bullard’s “Consumers Healthy” Remark (Consumer Sentiment At Lowest Level Since 1977 While Unemployment Rate At Only 3.6%)

St. Louis Fed President Bullard made a remark the other day that consumers are healthy so a recession is unlikely. Consumers are healthy? It is true that the US U-3 uemployment rate is low (3.6% versus 14.70% in April 2020 thanks to government shutdowns over Covid). But even though unemployment is low, consumer sentiment is at its lowest point since 1977. Generally, consumer sentiment is high when unemployment is low, but not this time around. Currently, inflation is at the highest level since March 1980 even though consumer sentiment bottomed-out in April 1980. Here is my chart showing that REAL...

Following UMich’s sentiment slump in July, analysts expect a further (modest) slide in Americans’ confidence in preliminary August data this morning. They wewre wrong, very wrong! Sentiment crashed in early August data according to UMich Sentiment survey with the headline plunging from 81.2 to 70.0 – that is weaker than the April 2020 COVID crisis lows…Worse still, ‘expectations’ collapsed too. “just 32% of consumers thought that the economy would improve, well below last month’s 45% and the 50% in June” Over the past half century, the Sentiment Index has only recorded larger losses in six other surveys, all connected to...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Consumer sentiment in March fell to its lowest level in more than a year as gasoline and food prices rose, a survey released on Friday showed. The index was slightly lower than March's preliminary reading, while inflation expectations remained elevated. Even so, the latest consumer survey from Thomson Reuters and the University of Michigan said there was no decline in buying plans. "While the data clearly indicate that the rate of real consumer spending will diminish, the data do not indicate a renewed downturn is now on the horizon," the report said. The final March reading...

Consumer sentiment fell to its lowest level in five months in early March as gas prices rose, a survey released on Friday showed. Even so, buying plans were largely unchanged and although the rate of real consumer spending will diminish, the report does not indicate a renewed downturn on the horizon, the latest consumer survey from Thomson Reuters and the University of Michigan said.

Today's bleak consumer confidence number is undoubtedly bad news for the economy. The bigger than expected drop suggests that consumers have lost confidence in the recovery, which will drive down home prices and consumer spending. Consumer confidence is typically our "first look" at the state of the economy. While most government aggregated data come out with a two-month lag, or more, consumer confidence hits with just a one month lag. Studies have shown that consumer confidence is a good predictor of consumer spending numbers. Basically, people surveyed seem to be good at accurately reading their own economic situation, and those...

With crude oil near $50 a barrel, consumer confidence could be in for a big hit. James E. Glassman, senior United States economist at J. P. Morgan, thinks otherwise. "My gasoline station manager didn't know that the price of oil was near $50 a barrel," Mr. Glassman said. "He just knows what the oil company charges him for gasoline when the delivery truck pulls up each night." That price has been dropping. The national average price of a gallon of midgrade gasoline reached $2.155 in May. It has since dropped to $1.97, according to the Department of Energy. Consumer confidence...
