We're a long way from the Start Menu now First, it scrapped the classic Start Menu and gave us Tiles. Now Microsoft has confirmed it really is working on yet another radical user interface update – one that will allow you to use your desktop Windows 10 PC with virtual reality headsets. The feature, due to arrive next year, is dubbed the Windows Holographic Shell. It is designed to work on any normal PC, not just high-end graphics rigs; the emphasis is on the fact that anyone with a half decent machine can use the new UI. The Holographic Shell...

Years back, Microsoft began paying people to use its Bing search service via a program called Bing Rewards. Now, Microsoft will do the same with its Edge browser and other products. Microsoft announced Wednesday that over the next few weeks, Bing Rewards will become Microsoft Rewards. The concept remains the same: The more you use or buy Microsoft products, the more freebies you’ll receive in return. With the debut of Microsoft Rewards, you'll also be able to accrue points by browsing with Edge or purchasing items at brick-and-mortar Microsoft Stores. Why this matters: At the end of July, Google Chrome...

What was meant as a joke about Usain Bolt and Ellen DeGeneres swiftly went awry on Twitter. On Monday, the daytime talk show host’s official Twitter account tweeted a doctored image of Ellen riding the back of the gold medalist. The photo is the now famous one of him smiling as he heads to winning the men’s 100m race at the Olympics in Rio. The tweet’s caption from Ellen reads “This is how I’m running errands from now on.” Some on Twitter found the image less than golden, with cries of racism and insensitivity in joking about a white woman...

FR has been a great resource before, so I'll give it a whirl here: Some friends of mine have a rather "adventurous" teenage daughter. As a result, they are looking for recommendations on the best options to STEALTHILY monitor her Windows 10 PC and IOS smartphone. While I am an IT type, I have zero experience or knowledge of this stuff as I never really needed it with my now adult sons.

I was poking around some old data today from some old backups, and I ran across something the old time computer folks will recognize and thought I'd share. Many, many moons ago, before the internet was much more than a few government systems set up to 'talk' to each other, we still had PCs and stuff, believe it or not. Granted, compared to the system you can buy for a few hundred dollars today from just about anywhere on the internet, they weren't much, but they were what we had. There were also things called "magazines" printed on thinly sliced...

I just downloaded about 10 updates on my Android. Every one downloaded fine, with the exception of the NRA-ILA app. I tried several times but only got an error message. And when I clicked on the error message, it gave me a message about "sorry about not being able to download Pokémon Go" Just seems fishy.

Our increasing reliance on the Internet and the ease of access to the vast resource available online is affecting our thought processes for problem solving, recall and learning. In a new article published in the journal Memory, researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz and University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign have found that 'cognitive offloading', or the tendency to rely on things like the Internet as an aide-mémoire, increases after each use. We might think that memory is something that happens in the head but increasingly it is becoming something that happens with the help of agents outside the...

One of the things that make Google so powerful is that the sheer amount of data the search engine gathers allows us to explore what people as a whole are interested in. Now the company is using all that data to make it easier for Americans to vote. Google says it will provide what it calls an "in-depth" search result when users look for information on how to cast a ballot — a search that's seen triple-digit growth in contested states such as Arizona since the last presidential election. The new search function can tell you the registration deadlines and...

Google appears to be working on a new operating system that's written from scratch and appears to be target both phones and PCs, among other form factors. This new OS is called Fuchsia and powered by what they call the Magenta and LK kernel options. Google hasn't formally announced this new OS while the Git repository cites it as "Pink + Purple == Fuchsia (a new Operating System)." This Git repository is the main source of Fuschia/Magneta information right now. LK is their kernel for small systems / embedded applications while Magenta is designed for "modern phones and modern personal...

Mac Man tries to gobble up all the Apples. Illustration: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac Cult of Mac 2.0 bugYou don’t see long lines for the latest Lenovo PC or LG Android phone. But take a quick peek on the internet and you’ll find plenty of people lining up to say how much they hate Apple. Every successful person or company has its critics, but the expressions of vitriol for Apple are more complex than the popular refrain ‘haters gonna hate’. Some are bugged by the price of Apple gadgets, others sneer over the enthusiasm of Apple fans, mockingly referring to...
