Occidental Petroleum quietly sold off a carbon capture facility – the world’s largest — that was built into a natural gas processing plant in Texas, according to a Bloomberg Green investigation. The plant, called Century, never operated at more than a third of its capacity since it was built in 2010. The White House said Americans should pay higher taxes to ensure a rapid green transition away from fossil fuels in a report on President Joe Biden’s economic record. The carbon capture package includes a bill, introduced Wednesday, for the United States to work toward a global goal of planting a trillion trees. It also features an expansion of a tax break approved by Congress in 2018 and signed by President Trump for companies that use carbon capture technology to trap carbon from fossil fuel or industrial plants. The European carbon market has been thrown into turmoil after the scandal-hit scheme was suspended for a week over suspicions of fraud. More than €2bn (£1.7bn) of trade is likely to be disrupted after the European Commission said it would prevent transactions until January 26. One of Al Gore's campaigns to save the planet has scaled back its field operations since climate legislation failed earlier this year in Congress. The Alliance for Climate Protection was operating in about 25 states at its peak, including Florida, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
