That the Federal Government has cancelled a constitionally mandated State Gubernatorial election seems unprecedented. Arguments in print and in broadcast media have begun and will go on about whether or not the court made the cxorrect decision. Either argument misses the larger issue which is a federal court cannot cancel an election. Third world dictatorships cancel and postpone scheduled elections.
