The problem with the "pro-choice" and "pro-life" labels are their meanings can be decieving. Meaning that if you are a politician that likes to say he is "pro-life" to the public, but will do nothing to help out or spark the pro-life movement for fear of political retaliation, you might as well be "pro-choice" in my book. McCain is a centrist on the issue. He will never go to battle for it, so he is upholding the status quo, which in this case is unborn children continuing to be killed in droves. Like I said...I am the extremist here. :)
"I'd love to see a point where it (Roe v. Wade) is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations."
"Uhm, how exactly has the GOP moved away from you?"
oh boy, where to begin, this could be an article in itself.....
Lets just look at the first issue I listed. Abortion. Even if you are lucky to find a GOP candidate today who claims to be pro-life, he won't touch the issue with a 10 ft poll once elected. It would be political suicide. Look at your main 2 hopefuls for Pres in '08, McCain, Gulliani. Pro-choice, pro-choice. The "social liberal"/ "fiscal conservative" GOP candidate is getting very popular.
Thus the later feeling of exploitation mentioned above......
I realized when writing this it would not be easy for women to read as it could be taken as an attack on the entire gender....not the purpose. But considering 1/3 of women will have an abortion before the age of 45, there is a considerable number of them out there......
Reinforcing with emotion and basing the belief in the first place on emotion, are two entirely different animals. There is nothing wrong with being passionate about something you believe to be right.
