Nuclear energy produces no greenhouse gases, but it has many drawbacks. Now a radical new technology based on thorium promises what uranium never delivered: abundant, safe and clean energy - and a way to burn up old radioactive waste. What if we could build a nuclear reactor that offered no possibility of a meltdown, generated its power inexpensively, created no weapons-grade by-products, and burnt up existing high-level waste as well as old nuclear weapon stockpiles? And what if the waste produced by such a reactor was radioactive for a mere few hundred years rather than tens of thousands? It may...

WASHINGTON, June 8 (UPI) -- With an arrest warrant looming, an Iraqi union leader warned during a U.S. visit failed negotiations will escalate the standoff in Basra's oil sector. Faleh Abood Umara, general secretary of the Iraq Federation of Oil Unions, said a five-day cooling off/negotiation period, which began Wednesday, is crucial to keep Iraq's oil sector pumping and 1.6 million barrels per day flowing to the global oil market. IFOU, an umbrella group representing more than 26,000 workers, has threatened to strike since early May over the draft oil law and other working conditions. It postponed the strike twice...

The head of a radical mosque in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, has threatened to use suicide bomb attacks against the government. Maulana Abdul Aziz made his defiant call to thousands of followers during Friday prayers. The government is facing calls to clamp down on the activites of students in two madrassas attached to the mosque. If the government does take action, "our last resort will be suicide bombings", Mr Aziz declared. He also demanded that the government close down Islamabad's video shops and brothels within one month.

Three sailors in Japan have been charged with spilling military secrets in a smut-swapping scandal that could reach up the navy's chain of command. The secrets involve an American ship-based missile shield. Pornography may be a sin, but when did anyone say it was a threat to national security? Three Japanese sailors have swapped military secrets along with smutty images, according to charges pressed last week by Japanese police. The scandal involves lower-ranking men but could reach higher into the navy's chain of command, and it's especially embarrassing for Tokyo because the leak has compromised an American-designed anti-missile system. A...

They were young cannon fodder -- sent by the Argentinian junta to win a war against the British 25 years ago. They were ill-equipped, starving and their own officers were their worst enemies. Dug into muddy trenches, they fought over every rotting biscuit. They secretly stole sheep from the islanders and, unable to make a fire -- it was wartime, after all -- they devoured the meat raw. "The months on the islands have marked us for life," says 45-year-old Norberto Santos. Forty-four-year-old Gabriel Sagasfume lost the soles of his feet to frostbite in the trenches: The military didn't have...

Several foreign embassies in Teheran are updating their emergency evacuation plans should a Western or Israeli attack on Iran occur. According to foreign sources, foreign diplomats believe a possible attack would take place before the end of 2007. By that time, Iran might have enough enriched uranium to cause a humanitarian and environmental catastrophe from radioactive fallout should its nuclear facilities be damaged or destroyed in an attack. Embassies in all countries generally have evacuation plans for their staff, but foreign sources describe the general atmosphere in Iran as one of heightened preparedness. Recently, several diplomatic missions based in Teheran...

Scientists studying pictures from Nasa's Odyssey spacecraft have spotted what they think may be seven caves on the surface of Mars. The candidate caves are on the flanks of the Arsia Mons volcano and are of sufficient depth their floors mostly cannot be seen through the opening. Details were presented here at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Houston, Texas. Temperature data from Mars Odyssey's Themis instrument support the idea. The authors say that the possible discovery of caves on the Red Planet is significant. The caves may be the only natural structures capable of protecting primitive life forms...

When his chickens started disappearing a few weeks ago, a farmer in eastern India figured dogs or jackals were to blame — until he discovered his calf making a meal of his poultry. Moloy, who uses only one name, and his 1-year-old calf have since become local celebrities, with the carnivorous cow appearing on television in India's West Bengal state and hundreds of people flocking to see them in Chandipur, a village 145 miles southwest of Calcutta, the state capital. "To catch the culprit, Moloy got up very early ... and to his disbelief found that it was his calf...

Yet Scotland Yard believes there are hard questions to be answered. Not least: how were traces of radiation left in several London locations where Mr Lugovoi was present, but Mr Litvinenko was not?

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I am not an expert or a scholar or an activist. I am more of an eye-witness. I watched the Soviet Union collapse, and I have tried to put my observations into a concise message. I will leave it up to you to decide just how urgent a message it is. My talk tonight is about the lack of collapse-preparedness here in the United States. I will compare it with the situation in the Soviet Union, prior to its collapse. The rhetorical device I am going to use is the "Collapse Gap" – to go...

Power. Politics. Murder. Boris Berezovsky could teach the guys in Sicily a thing or two. LAST NOVEMBER Ronald Lauder, billionaire heir to the Estée Lauder cosmetics fortune, traveled to Moscow to celebrate the opening of a posh boutique on Red Square. That evening Russian and American business leaders, U.S. Ambassador Thomas Pickering and President Boris Yeltsin's wife attended a party in Lauder's honor. The host of the lavish affair? A wealthy Russian car dealer named Boris Berezovsky. Ronald Lauder probably did not know that his host is a powerful gangland boss and the prime suspect in Russia's most famous murder...

No, spending was not up 19%. A survey of shoppers DONE 11/23-11/25 found that people said they expected to spend 19% more. These were not actual spent dollars, but rather, were expctations of spending. There's an enormous difference, especailly when we consider that people tend to be very poor judges of their own behavior. Note that this error is endemic to this group, and last year saw the same issue: for 2005, the NATIONAL RETAIL FEDERATION said holdiay Retail sales rose 22% (it didn’t). Its hard to imagine a 19% increase in spending would lead to triple digit loss for...

Here is a great article written by Bill Bonner the founder and president of Agora Publishing. The article appeared in the American Free Press (645 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, Suite 100 Washington, D.C. 20003) CHINESE HAVE MOST MONEY ON PLANET AMERICA NOW BIGGEST DEBTOR IN THE WORLD On the Money with Bill Bonner $30million and $80 million. Two big numbers, and the end of the world as we have known it. The first number is the rate at which China is adding to its reserves of foreign currencies—mostly dollars—every hour. The second number is the rate at which America’s capital—as measured...
