A social media influencer who extolled the virtues of a vegan diet of raw tropical fruit has died, reportedly of malnutrition, exhaustion and infections. Zhanna Samsonova, a Russian blogger who regularly posted about her extreme diet of raw tropical fruit on Instagram and TikTok, was living and working in south-east Asia. The 39-year-old claimed she had not drank water for six years, drinking fruit and vegetable juices instead. She regularly spoke of taking pride in the fact that people could not believe she was approaching her 40th birthday.

I’m just a semi-retired lawyer, living on a gravel road in the Blue Ridge Mountains. But I am also an avid consumer of news in all forms. This is a test. I read none of today’s analyses of the State of the Union speech. Here are the obvious lies I saw, off the top of my head. Lie 1: “one in ten... cannot find work.” Government statistics show that unemployment is almost double that; 17% are out of work. But the “official” rate ignores the 7% who have given up looking for a job. Lie 2: “to get a government...

Mixed Messages Proponents say they offer 'support,' but a Stanford study finds that patients who visited pro-anorexia Web sites were sicker longer. Web Exclusive By Karen Springen Newsweek Updated: 7:09 p.m. ET Dec 7, 2006 Dec. 7, 2006 - Drink ice-cold water ("your body has to burn calories to keep your temperature up") and hot water with bullion cubes ("only 5 calories a cube, and they taste wonderful"). When a food craving strikes, give yourself a manicure ("applying extra layers of slow-drying polish. It will keep your hands occupied"). These kinds of tips are common fare in the growing world...

LONDON (AFP) - British film star Keira Knightley made no apologies for her slender figure at the European premiere of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" in her hometown London. ADVERTISEMENT The 21-year-old A-lister wore a revealing gold Gucci dress slashed to the waist that had some onlookers wondering if she was bowing to Hollywood pressure to be super-skinny. "Whatever people say about my weight they are all wrong," she told reporters on her way into the premiere, which was also attended by her fellow "Pirates" stars Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. "Hollywood is all about the way you...

The Death of Terri Schiavo By Jennifer King April 8, 2005 As Terri Schiavo gasped her way to the painful death ordered for her by a renegade judge, outrage about this blatant travesty of justice still lingers. What seems indisputable is that Michael Schiavo was assuredly not looking out for his wife's best interests, or fulfilling a long ago made vow. Michael's actions throughout bespeak selfish cruelty with a streak of sadism mixed in. Were Michael and Terri Schiavo happily married before her bizarre "collapse"? Family members insist that Terri was considering divorce, because Michael was controlling and authoritative, and...

GLOBE EDITORIAL Terri Schiavo's affliction April 5, 2005 RIVETED BY the personal and political battles over Terri Schiavo's rights to life and death, the country is largely ignoring a chance to act on an underlying issue: eating disorders. Schiavo was an overweight kid who reportedly wept when she bought clothes, fearful of being teased about her size. After high school she lost weight, dropping from over 200 pounds to 150. When she was 26 she weighed 110 pounds. On Feb. 25, 1990, less than three months after her 26th birthday, she collapsed. Her heart stopped, depriving her brain of oxygen...

Judge George Greer ruled that the State of Florida has no right to take custody of Terri Schiavo, which ruling came hours after an appeal by Terri's parents to re-insert the feeding tube was refused by the U.S. Supreme Court. Meanwhile, another hearing was scheduled tonight before US District Judge James D. Whittemore .. the same judge who previously heard and denied the request subsequent to the 'de novo' intention of the law past last weekend by the Congress and signed by President Bush, in an effort to confirm that no stone was left unturned before Terri would endure legally...

'Cheers' star Kirstie Alley has been attacked by members of the world's leading eating disorders group for joking about 'life threatening diseases' like bulimia on her new comedy show 'Fat Actress.'Officials at the National Eating Disorder Center are furious with the actress for trivializing eating disorders during the debut of her new program. In one scene, co-star Kelly Preston tells Alley's character that making herself sick after every meal is one way of losing weight- a practice commonly used by bulimics.NEDA CEO Lyn Grefe says, 'My guess is that Kirstie Alley's concept for the show was born from her frustrations with...

Fat, But not an Actress Tomorrow is the big premier of Kirstie Alley's new show "Fat Actress." I'm excited because I too, am fat. But to clarify, I'm NOT an actress. However, I'm starting another "Big Diet" tomorrow, maybe even inspired by this show. It's one of many diets I've been on over the years. My last one was successful, having lost about 50 pounds in, oh, about 6 months. But alas, after a few years, back surgery, and a new boyfriend (who claims he loves "all" of me) I gained it all back. I consider him responsible for 99...

Even years after a person is diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, they have twice the risk of bone fractures as their peers without the eating disorder, new study findings from Denmark show. The findings suggest that damage caused to bones by eating disorders may be permanent, according to a report in the International Journal of Eating Disorders. However, it is possible that patients in the study were still struggling with the eating disorder, which may have kept bones from regaining strength, the report indicates. Previous studies have found that people with eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia can suffer from...
