Didn't we fix this back in 2005? Apparently not Click this link (don't fret, nothing malicious). Chances are your browser displays "apple.com" in the address bar. What about this one? Goes to "epic.com," right?Wrong. They are in fact carefully crafted but entirely legitimate domains in non-English languages that are designed to look exactly the same as common English words. The real domains for the two above links are: xn--80ak6aa92e.com and xn--e1awd7f.com.In quick testing by El Reg, Chrome 57 on Windows 10 and macOS 10.12, and Firefox 52 on macOS, display apple.com and epic.com rather than the actual domains. We're told...
  • Why Am I Having So Much Trouble Browsing The Internet? Is It The Things and Sites I'm Visiting?

Two weeks ago, I researched online about what "asymmetrical warfare" is, and then all heck broke loose since that time for two weeks. I got knocked off the internet on the average of every ten minutes, every single day. Internet Explorer had monumental issues, but when I did get on I utilized weather data for my area, then on to FR as usual. But when I was on FR, I would get bumped off AGAIN... I had a tech come to the house to find out whether there was any kind of issue with the internet, and he said there...

There's A Secret Internet For Drug Dealers, Assassins, And Pedophiles Dylan LoveMarch 6, 2013, 7:00 AMThe average person is only aware of a fraction of the Internet. There is more content out there than any conventional browser can access. These sites are termed "Deep Web" or "Undernet." They exist outside the scope of Google, Facebook, and your RSS reader. It's the digital equivalent of a thriving city that's been domed over and cordoned off. These sites are locked down so tightly that you need a special browser to access them. It's called the Tor browser, and it offers you an...

There is just a week to go until Google controversially changes its privacy policy to allow it to gather, store and use personal information about its users. But there is one way to stymie the web giant's attempts to build a permanent profile of you that could include personal information including age, gender, locality and even sexuality. From March 1, you won't be able to opt out of the new policy, which has been criticised by privacy campaigners who have filed a complaint to U.S. regulators. But before that date you can delete your browsing history and,

Since the recent security warnings surrounding Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser were issued, more and more people around the world have been turning to a small Open Source alternative spawned from the developers of the Mozilla browser: Mozilla Firefox. Though it is small in download size, don't let it fool you. There's nothing small about this application. It's one hell of a contender for the Internet browser throne. Can it topple the software giants flagship product? Yes, I think it can. Sure, Internet Explorer dominates 90+ percent of the market, but I think people are starting to grow weary of...

In an unusual move, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is considering whether to revoke a patent that Internet experts claim could hobble Web browsing and online commerce. The office's top patent-examination official has ordered a review of a patent that covers the ability of Web browsers to display multimedia content, the office confirmed on Thursday.PTO Deputy Commissioner Stephen Kunin ordered the review after Internet engineers said the patent did not cover an original invention and would cause massive disruption for Web users, spokeswoman Brigid Quinn said."The director has to have received quite a bit of input from the community"...

Browse the recall By Mike Langberg Mercury News California's Oct. 7 recall election is unique not only because voters will decide whether to eject a governor from office for the first time in state history, but because so many people -- 132 at last count -- are making serious and not-so-serious attempts to replace Gray Davis. The Web may be one explanation for the huge slate of candidates. Anyone comfortable with the basics of Web design can create a site that looks almost as good as what you'd get from high-priced professionals. Instead of handing out fliers on a street...
