Browse the recall By Mike Langberg Mercury News California's Oct. 7 recall election is unique not only because voters will decide whether to eject a governor from office for the first time in state history, but because so many people -- 132 at last count -- are making serious and not-so-serious attempts to replace Gray Davis. The Web may be one explanation for the huge slate of candidates. Anyone comfortable with the basics of Web design can create a site that looks almost as good as what you'd get from high-priced professionals. Instead of handing out fliers on a street corner, recall candidates can at least hope voters from around the state will flock to their sites. I made my own list of recall Web sites and discovered 85 percent of candidates are now online. (For the complete tally, go to www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/news/special_packages/recall and click on the link labeled `List of certified candidates.`) I then dived deep into the sites of the seven major candidates, who vary widely in how effectively they're using the Web. I've also made a list of 8 interesting sites from among the 125 candidates who aren't considered contenders. ...

Maybe that's why Simon had to drop out -- he didn't even have a website in the beginning weeks. When he finally got one, the website was at a different address than his 2002 campaign site, which no longer worked, and the new site was very incomplete and contained links to pages still under construction.

I never took Simon's entry into the recall race seriously, so I am not surprised he had no effective website presence. Goes to show how much inertia can carry one. Never bumped into a real living, breathing Simon supporter either. Have been pleasantly surprised to hear McClintock's name from some friends without prompting though. (Sigh)

I was surprised that even a liberal democrat friend told me he was thinking of voting for McClintock. I hadn't mentioned the recall at all, since I thought either I wouldn't be able to stand my friend's opinions or I wouldn't stop talking.

The friend said this might finally be the time for an extreme candidate (in his view, especially on the social issues), and he recognizes that Tom is the best hope for fixing the budget.

Actually, at your link, Bustamante got 2 stars. Davis it the loser.
Also, Huffington got 4 stars (full score) and Camejo got 3 stars.

Sorry, I doublechecked on Bustamante and you're right.

As to your friend, I think you've enunciated what some of us may have in our minds but perhaps have not conveyed well enough, or tried to convey. Bustamante is unelectable and Davis is extremely vulnerable, which makes almost anybody with an (R) next to his or her name and certainly someone like McC, potentially, the next governor.

Let's see, I need to say something positive about Arnold!, so... With all the Republican leaders falling over themselves to anoint Arnold!, I think he deserves MUCH more credit for his acting abilities than he's been getting in the reviews... ;-)

sigh
