<p>Brian Boquist said that his hat still is in the ring for the Republican nomination for the 5th District congressional seat in the Mid-Willamette Valley.</p> <p>But he wrote Friday in an e-mail message from Baghdad, Iraq, that if he remains on active military duty and Democratic incumbent Darlene Hooley of West Linn files for a fifth term, he might reconsider his candidacy.</p>

<p>Salem state Sen. Jackie Winters formally entered the race to unseat Democratic Congresswoman Darlene Hooley on Wednesday.</p> <p>Winters had been contemplating the race for several months but wanted to wait until her mind cleared after the 2003 legislative session ended. Her decision was clinched, she said, when she won the support from one wavering family member.</p>

<p>Salem Republican Jackie Winters might try to unseat local Congresswoman Darlene Hooley with a nudge from the top gun in her party — George W. Bush.</p> <p>“I’ve had conversations with the president on a couple of occasions,” said Winters, serving in her first state Senate term. “I’ve said that I would look at it, but I won’t do anything until after the session.”</p>
