FILM CREW UNDER FIRE FROM MEXICAN ARMY by Rick Murray October 5, 2005—Yesterday afternoon, a crew filming a documentary about 2 miles west of the Coronado National Memorial was fired upon by what was described as members of the Mexican Army. The crew, from CDW Films in Corona Del Mar, California, was in the area filming footage for a documentary on the Minutemen who are monitoring the U.S./Mexico border as they did in April of this year. The crew had gone out to explore areas along the border with two guides unrelated to the Minuteman activities. The driver of a...

In the fall of 1964 I was living in a rented room in north London. The house was owned by a lady who had misplaced her husband somehow — I don’t recall the details. She had a son and a daughter living at home. The daughter was in her early twenties, and working. The son was about my age — I was 19 — and a student at the local art college. I didn’t know much about the art-school scene, and the little I knew I didn’t much like, so I can’t say I found the guy very simpatico. We...

There is a potentially fatal flaw at the heart of the global economy: the strong possibility of financial meltdown following a collapse of confidence in the greenback, Clyde Prestowitz tells Bruce Stannard August 29, 2005 THE nightmare scenario that haunts global strategist Clyde Prestowitz is an economic September 11 -- a worldwide financial panic triggered by a sudden massive sell-off of US dollars that would lead inexorably to the collapse of economies around the world. If that happens, Prestowitz predicts: "It would make the Great Depression of the 1930s look like a walk in the park." Australia would be sucked...

But get near a newspaper, radio, television or computer retailer today and you will experience the multimillion-dollar hype surrounding the launch of Windows 95. Bob Geldof, the fading B-class rocker formerly of the "Boomtown Rats", recently made it known that Prime Minister Paul Martin wasn’t welcome at the upcoming G-8 summit unless he was prepared to cough up .7% of Canada’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to help "fight poverty" in Africa. Geldof must have the balls of a canal horse to think that who is or is not invited to attend the summit depends on him. Some 20 years ago Geldof’s Live Aid concert, which was held to alleviate poverty and starvation in Ethiopia, accomplished very little, if anything to that end. At least...

BRANSON — In the wake of Big Idea Productions' bankruptcy and sale to new owner Classic Media, VeggieTales characters are struggling to define their post-Big Idea lives. In a modest but clean condominium in Branson, Mo., Bob the Tomato sits on a rented couch and nibbles cheese curls. The window overlooks the busy thoroughfare jammed with tourist traffic. Bob's chin shows three days of stubble, his eyes the emotional scars of a recent bout with depression, but tonight he'll be performing again for the first time since Jonah — A VeggieTales Movie. After bouncing around the country for the past...

April 27, 2005 -- CHALK it up to fingers stiffened over more years than Bob Dylan wants to remember, but rather than play his trusty guitar at the Beacon Theatre Monday night, the legendary songwriter clumsily pawed the keys of his electric piano. Yet this nod to geezerdom during the first of his five-night series didn't hurt Dylan's set. The 63-year-old star kept his keyboards miked low, his vocals in front of the five-man band while he delivered 90 minutes of time-tested tunes. But the buzz at this show didn't concern guitars, pianos or why the Oscar he won two...

OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR Washington IN the coming weeks, we may witness a vote in the United States Senate that will define the 109th Congress for the ages. This vote will not be about war and peace, the economy or the threat from terrorism. It will focus instead on procedure: whether the Senate should amend its own rules to ensure that nominees to the federal bench can be confirmed by a simple majority vote. I have publicly urged caution in this matter. Amending the Senate rules over the objection of a substantial minority should be the option of last resort. I still...

Wandering around the internet looking for information on Catherine Ingram, President of the Ohio School Board Association, one of the people ducking responsibility in the case involving the disabled girl who was gang-raped in a Columbus, Ohio public high school, I found many connections between her and the GLSEN. I also found this interesting little website which contains a list of ALL US Senators, Reps, etc and corresponding views toward homosexuals. Wow!

CINCINNATI - Investigators probing Berkeley Premium Nutraceuticals, the maker of Enzyte penis enlargement pills, sent hundreds of the company's employees home and confiscated records during searches of three of the company's Cincinnati-area offices. The law enforcement officials looked through file cabinets, computers and voice-mail systems on Wednesday as they searched for documents in a fraud investigation of the herbal supplement company. No charges were filed and no arrests were made, but the bank accounts of one office were frozen. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service said the company's records will be examined to determine whether Berkeley violated mail-fraud laws. Berkeley customers...

House calls The ABC hit "Desperate Housewives" is getting a new face. Bob Newhart, 75, confirmed with Ellen DeGeneres on Thursday's airing of her talk show that he has joined the "Housewives" cast. Newhart will play the father-in-law of Teri Hatcher's character in a reoccurring role in eight episodes. Newhart, who's originally from the Windy City, was part of an all-Chicago-themed edition of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." While taping a show segment earlier this month at the Chicago Auto Show, DeGeneres randomly invited 200 Chicagoans to fly to Burbank to be in the audience for the special show, including restaurateurs...

I could use some intel from you guys. Last week, I broke the story on Clear Channel stations from coast to coast of how the US is conducting clandestine reconnaissance missions via Global Hawk in Iran. The Hawks are searching for intel on Iran's nuke program. One went down near Arak, where Iran has their heavy-water facility. I also reported that the rumors of US manned reconnaissance flights over Iran were in fact decoy flights to draw Iran's attention away from the GH missions. I just heard on MSNBC that Sy Hirsch will have an article in next week's "New...

Yes, the election is behind us, but it is not yet time to heal the wounds. We cannot let the Democrats forget the vitriol they spewed during the campaign. Their ugly tactics are part of history. Forget history and we repeat our mistakes. Remember Bob Woodward’s charge that President Bush and the Saudis had a secret “deal” to keep oil prices low in the run-up to the 2004 presidential election? (See also here). There is no documentation showing that such a deal was ever made. Historical oil and gas prices in 2004 provide empirical evidence that no such deal was...

Tell Me That It Isn't True ...12/12/2004 09:31:51 amOne hopes that the implosion of Bernard Kerik's nomination does not signal the beginning of a trend where those endorsed by Right Wing Bob go belly-up. I think not. However, now we need a new Secretary of Homeland Security, and with my favorite candidate out of the running, there's an opportunity to promote someone whom common sense and good taste had previously restrained me from suggesting. Well, enough of that.Who could be better for the position of protecting America from Islamist terrorists than a man who has successfully, and single-handedly, defied the...
