Crime-ridden San Francisco has introduced new sanitized language for criminals, getting rid of words such as “offender” and “addict” while changing “convicted felon” to “justice-involved person.” The Board of Supervisors adopted the changes last month even as the city reels from one of the highest crime rates in the country and staggering inequality exemplified by pervasive homelessness alongside Silicon Valley wealth. The local officials say the new language will help change people’s views about those who commit crimes.

Ed Edelman, the longtime Los Angeles County supervisor whose crusading policymaking influenced many aspects of local life including child welfare, health services and environmental preservation, has died. He was 85. During his 20 years on the Board of Supervisors, Edelman championed efforts to improve the way county government treated its most vulnerable citizens while also fighting to protects parts of the Santa Monica Mountains from development.

San Francisco became the first place in the country Tuesday to require businesses to provide fully paid leave for new parents in what was hailed as the latest move to address income inequality in the nation. Forget losing weight, exercising more or saving money. A standard New Year's resolution simply won't do for the perennially button-pushing Supervisor Chris Daly. He announced at the rules committee hearing this morning - and reiterated on his Facebook page - that "For 2010, I vow to use the word "f---" in each of my remaining Board of Supervisors meetings." He's termed out of office a year from Friday so that means dozens of potential Daly f-bombs are on the way.

BISBEE - Following on the heels of Gov. Janet Napolitano's Aug. 15 declaration of a border emergency, the Cochise County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday morning took similar action. The "Declaration of Local Emergency to Address Illegal Immigrant Impacts in Cochise County" says "Š an emergency exists as a result of illegal immigration and its resulting impacts, which endanger life or property."
