Food stamps were first issued in 1939 as an assistance program to prevent starvation during the Great Depression. But 86 years later, thousands of liquor stores and smoke shops have become approved retailers, increasing the possibility of fraud, new research shows.
The longest ever government shutdown, which ended after 43 days of deadlock, thrust the federal food stamp program into the national spotlight as millions of recipients went without benefits. But, it also laid bare many abuses in the system.
Even before the shutdown, the Trump administration planned to crack down on fraud in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program and ensure any government assistance is used for healthy and nutritional foods, not junk. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act made specific changes to qualifying for the program, as well as a redefined list of products for which SNAP cannot be used.
An analysis of SNAP retailer data by the Foundation for Government Accountability published on Monday found that more than 5,000 liquor and smoke shops were approved retailers under the program, meaning they can accept food stamps, according to research findings shared exclusively with Just the News.

Ya think?
Has there ever been a government program that didn’t end up full of corruption?
Gee. I wonder if MAC Donald’s is ebt approved? Carnival Cruise Lines?
Welfare money is especially handy for two types of businesses: on-premises and off-premises.
This is bad but focusing on fraud will never work. With a massive program like food stamps, there will always be fraud. Try to combat it, sure. But the answer is to cut back food stamps. The middle class should not be getting food stamps - that was Obama’s doing and the Republicans never cut it back. And food stamps should be temporary for the poor unless they are disabled or elderly.
Tobacco? Corn squeezin’s? It’s a vegan grocery store.
The solution is government EBT stores with only approved foodstuffs. Confine the current SNAP program to rural areas where there’s minimal access.
The Mandami effect.
No, tattoo shops are next...
NYS...I think they were even using SNAP at the casinos.
Hell, when there were actual ‘Food Stamps’ being used, there were FURNITURE STORES in da hood that had signs “We accept Food Stamps”
For $0.50 on the dollar of course...............
Food Stamps in 1939 were a means for government to get rid of New Deal surpluses of agriculture products. The program ended in 1943 when WWII put an end to any agriculture surpluses.
Before WWII, about 1 in 30 Americans (4 million) received surplus Govt food, via a system of orange and blue stamps they had to purchase, and were given 50% extra stamps, only for items the government considered “in surplus.”
For the next 18 years after 1943, there was no Federal program
John F. Kennedy in 1961 told the USDA to begin research into a new Food Stamp program, and congress and LBJ signed the “Food Stamp Act” in 1964, which was really what we have today. In 1971, state participation became mandatory and in 1977 Food Stamps took the final form we have today, with “free” stamps (later electronic cards) simply given to participants.
Which is the basic difference between Capitalism and Socialism. This is why there needs to be a law that people need to sign up for these programs annually. Make people apply IN PERSON every other year.
Just like when I have to enroll in my Health Care for next year(annual enrollment). This applies to voter checklists too. Some retired accountants reviewed the voter checklist for a suburb of Nashua. A small town of 10K. They found that the voter roll was off by 30%. Mostly just because people had died or moved out of town. The law in NH states that this list needs to be audited every ten years. These two people were pushing to change the law to every two years.
Think of this now on a national scale. Not just a very affluent suburban town of 10K residents. There are probably millions of dead people getting benefits. The problem is the people working for that government organization really don't care. It is government money. Not theirs.
The program is rife with fraud and corruption.
"In 2023, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated that 11.7% of SNAP benefits—approximately $10.5 billion—were paid out improperly, with fraud contributing to a portion of these losses through recipient and retailer violations."
You’ll never get anyone to agree to cutting a program
they won’t be able to ge reelected
Bring back commodities. Let the farmers feed the poor.
I spent most of my money on booze and women. The rest of my money I wasted.
21 or 22 states are still refusing to share their SNAP data with the USDA.
Now the nation knows what some suspected.
The question is what will be done about it.
We need to give the president the time and flexibility to deal with the problem.
The Foundation for Government Accountability found

If that were the case, then Deep State wouldn’t have to steal elections, would it.
And it steals them even in allegedly blue cities and allegedly blue states.
