Fans of the well-loved comic strip Bloom County are celebrating this morning, after cartoonist Berkeley Breathed issued the first panels of his satirical strip in decades. Breathed won a Pulitzer Prize for his work on Bloom County back in 1987; two years later, he quit producing it. On Sunday, he posted a photo of himself to Facebook in which he sat in front of a computer screen with an empty cartoon template titled Bloom County 2015. "A return after 25 years. Feels like going home," he wrote. And on Monday, one of Breathed's central characters, Opus, awoke from his long...

Beloved cartoonist Berkeley Breathed had an unusual inspiration for his latest children's book, "Flawed Dogs." No it wasn't one of the Santa Barbaran's many rescued pit bulls, but it was one of Michael Vick's infamous dogs who was set to be put down. "The book happened because I came across both a picture and a quote at about the same time -- a picture of one of Michael Vick's fight dogs. It was set to be put down, but a shelter in Utah decided to take the dog and a few others at the same time and try to rehabilitate...

By now, everyone is aware of the breaking news of GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin and the vitriolic attacks she is enduring at the hands of the Marxists. Couple this, with the news that her daughter, Bristol, is into her second trimester. I know there are a good company of fellow FReepers out there who are fans of "Bloom County", as I am. Some of you might recall an early strip, involving the staff of the "Bloom County Picayune" lamenting their lack of traction against an opponent, until an inconsequenial event occurs and they gleefully announce, "WE HAVE A SCANDAL!!"...

13 years ago, Berkley Breathed prophecied that digital photograph would be used to alter photos reliability as fact. (Of course, a lot of people did, but just play along.) Out of repsect for their copyright control, I direct you to the comic as a link: http://images.ucomics.com/comics/blm/1993/blm930822.gif And, here is a link to the web page of U Comics: http://www.gocomics.com/bloomcounty/ You can read the lead in to this at this link: http://www.gocomics.com/bloomcounty/1993/08/15/

With all the opuses (opii?) around here lately, maybe it's best to just see who is still here.

Today marks the long-awaited, speculated-about, unabashed return of Steve Dallas to comics pages. While he's a bit older, he certainly is no wiser, according to cartoonist Berkeley Breathed's publicist.Breathed has received hundreds of letters and e-mails requesting Steve's comeback since Opus began a year ago.

One of New Mexico's biggest American Indian-run casinos has pulled a controversial TV ad that promoted gambling as a financial solution to people who are short on cash or deeply in debt. The Isleta Casino Resort commercial ran earlier this month featuring a young woman who suggested that the answer to unpaid bills piling up from holiday-season shopping sprees could be found at the casino, which operates just south of Albuquerque. The casino declined to comment on why it pulled the ad, but the spot drew condemnations from numerous critics who said the commercial was morally reprehensible. "It's outrageous. This...

OK so maybe "Rhymes with Orange" is occasionally cute and "Get Fuzzy" has a nice dry sardonic bite and of course "Boondocks" is the wonderfully bitter non-PC lightning rod du jour and some people for some reason really, really love "Zippy the Pinhead," though I'm still not sure why.

So then about a month ago the vice president of these beautiful and deeply confused United States, he of the struggling defibrillator and the shockingly nefarious wife and the gnarled calluses from working Dubya's puppet strings, he of the thin-lipped sneer that makes babies cry and women wince and foreign policies crumble like feta cheese in the freezer, well, Dick goes himself a-huntin'.

As a tail-end Gen-Xer, I cut my political teeth on the comic strip "Bloom County." So the recent news that creator Berkeley Breathed is bringing back the strip's star — Opus the penguin — is welcome news. Since Opus, The Far Side, and Calvin & Hobbes all retired, there hasn't been much reason at all to read the comics page. Bloom County, you may remember, featured a hodgepodge cast of prairie critters (one of them was actually named "Hodgepodge"), pre-adolescent boys (about my age when I started reading), and adults (whose role was mostly to play the fool). It began...

After eight years away from newspapers, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed is creating a new comic strip called "Opus," starring his beloved penguin of the same name. The Washington Post Writers Group, which will syndicate the strip, is expected to officially announce Breathed's return this Sunday. The reclusive Breathed, who rarely gives interviews, could not be reached yesterday for comment. The new strip will appear on Sundays in The Washington Post starting Nov. 23. Breathed drew the wildly popular "Bloom County" and "Outland" comic strips, which introduced the world to the naive Opus and his hairball-spitting sidekick, Bill the Cat....
