I have been reading Berke's comics since he worked for the Daily Texan while a student of UT Austin.
He is great cartoonist and a great guy.

I love Bloom County. I hate he retired for so long.
But Berke Breathed is back and as funny and insightful as ever.

My wife and I rented the DVD Secondhand Lions a few months ago. (great family-friendly movie). The movie revolves around the memories of a now-adult cartoon artist. At the age of about 13 he is dropped off at the home of his two great uncles who raise him. Toward the end of the movie, the camera pans walls covered with his artwork and I thought I recognized the work immediately. I checked the net the next day and sure enough Breathed offered to do the artwork for the movie (I'm pretty sure free of charge).
I've following his work for years. My favorite strip shows Oliver Wendel Jones sitting at a computer while he is working on a "New-clear" device when he says "Oops!" Opus proceeds to run around screaming "An Oops! I heard a definite Oops!" Funny stuff. By the way, "New-clear" is not a shot at our president. It is the way two of Breathed's characters (Portnoy and another - can't remember his name) who are right-wing in spirit pronounce "nuclear".

Another Bloom County relevant to recent events was one where the found out that Opus was forging documents (it was the supposed Hitler Diaries that had been "found" at the time). It turns out that (I believe it was Dan Rather) had discovered that the stationary on which the documents were written was official Dukes of Hazzard stationary (I think Opus' line was something to the effect of "hey! It was clearance!")

Oh, Secondhand Lions is one of my favorite movies. I immediately bought it when it became available.
I was remind of Bloom County when I saw the movie also. Great research on your part. But then again Freepers are becoming know for our ability to do research.

I'd be curious to know if a particular event at that time prompted that cartoon

That would be "Hodge-Podge."
Bloom County was the only good reason to subscribe to the Daily Illini when I was in school.
Ah, memories.

I wasn't aware he was back. Is he daily? Weekly? Name of strip?
