Jeb Bush rips Davis for state of budget President's brother on fund-raising trip By Philip J. LaVelle STAFF WRITER June 21, 2002 Florida Gov. Jeb Bush yesterday blamed Gray Davis for California's record $23.6 billion budget shortfall and told a San Diego audience it would be "unconscionable" for the Democratic governor to be re-elected in November. Bush's remarks, denounced by the Davis campaign, were made during a breakfast at the U.S. Grant Hotel, one of several stops on his fund-raising swing through California. "Don't let Gray Davis talk about how his $23 billion, or soon-to-be $30 billion, budget deficit somehow...

I recently decided to participate in the National Marrow Donor Program Registry in which a blood sample is tissue typed. Should someone (that I do not know) need a donor and my tissue type be a match, I would donate marrow (or blood for peripheral stem cells).I am a big fan of Rand's, though not an orthodox Objectivist. I wonder what she would have to say about thisCertainly she considered the altruistic philosophy - self sacrifice - to be evil. Yet she did allow for voluntary charity in cases where the recipient was deserving and the donor not harmed by...

Remarks by Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, Arlington, VA, Thursday, June 20, 2002. Thank you, Joanne [Joanne Shirley, Chairman of the Board]. Thank you for everything that you and the members of the National League are doing to keep people focused on our unfinished business in Southeast Asia and other parts of the world. General Davis told me that he was at a dinner last night where the speaker spoke after dinner for an hour and a half, so by my count I have until midnight. [Laughter] I'll try to let you go sooner than that. I'm very...

I might make a few remarks before responding to questions. First, good morning. I'm pleased to have a chance to meet with the representatives of the news media from so many countries, countries that are making important contributions to the global war on terrorism. MCHENRY -- The Illinois Libertarian Party will be filing petitions on Monday for the slate of statewide candidates in Fall 2002 elections. The Illinois Republican Party is concerned about the effect Libertarian Party candidate for Governor former State Rep. Cal Skinner may have on the Governor's race. Cook County Republicans are now asking for assistance in challenging the Libertarian Party slate's petitions. "I'm not surprised at all about this," said Skinner of Crystal Lake. "As a matter of fact, a challenge just like this took place in 1998, and the Secretary of State's staff was allegedly involved in going through...

In an aggressive new effort to shut down abusive corporate tax shelters, the Internal Revenue Service plans to begin demanding that companies and accountants turn over internal work papers that the tax agency in the past largely left alone. .The papers it will seek can amount to a guide to all the questionable tax strategies a company has employed, along with its accountants' assessment of the chances the agency will disallow them, tax experts say. .The shift comes at a time when the IRS is struggling to increase its audit rates of individuals and businesses and to make the audits...

To ask the question, "Can the State of Israel be both a Jewish and a democratic state?" has become very fashionable, and very painful, in recent years. I suspect that most observers of the Jewish-Arab conflict imagine that this question became a major problem before our eyes as the conflict between Jews and Palestinians has became ever more embittered. I have read much Zionist writing which imagines that in earlier times, nearer the beginnings of the new Jewish settlement in Palestine, the Jewish society was accepted as the model of democracy for Arabs. This happy vision even used to be...

Prepare to bask. Today - summer solstice - the sun lingers its longest in the sky, almost a full 17 hours from sunup to sundown. While most of us will go about our business enjoying the promised partly sunny day, the pagans - witches, druids and such - will take time to celebrate the seasonal shift from cool spring to full-on heat wave. Some will hike up Mount Pisgah at dawn. Others plan drumming circles at dusk and potlucks on Saturday. K.C. Anton planned to sing the sun up at home with his wife, daughter and close friends in a...

PARIS, June 20 (Reuters) - A French judge has refused an anti-racism group's request for an immediate ban on Italian writer Oriana Fallaci's controversial book which suggests the September 11 attacks had shown the true face of Islam. French anti-racism group MRAP asked Judge Herve Stephan to ban Fallaci's "Rage and Pride", saying its contents amounted to incitement of racial hatred. Stephan said on Friday he saw no point in an urgent ban because the book was already on sale in Italy and France. He referred the case to another court which will hear it on July 10. Fallaci, a...
