I still say the Israeli's have a very keen, reasonable and very vested interest in knowing REALLY what their chief supporter is up to. We have demonstrated plenty of capacity to be destructive toward them while we support them. I don't blame them for keeping tabs on us. We're about as fickle and unpredictable a supporter as any spouse would ever dare want.

Now seriously, I'm sure the USA also spies on Israel. All countries do it. You wouldn't respect 'em if they didn't try.

Spy Rumors Fly on Gusts of Truth Americans Probing Reports of Israeli Espionage By MARC PERELMAN
FORWARD STAFF
Despite angry denials by Israel and its American supporters, reports that Israel was conducting spying activities in the United States may have a grain of truth, the Forward has learned.
However, far from pointing to Israeli spying against U.S. government and military facilities, as reported in Europe last week, the incidents in question appear to represent a case of Israelis in the United States spying on a common enemy, radical Islamic networks suspected of links to Middle East terrorism.
In particular, a group of five Israelis arrested in New Jersey shortly after the September 11 attacks and held for more than two months was subjected to an unusual number of polygraph tests and interrogated by a series of government agencies including the FBI's counterintelligence division, which by some reports remains convinced that Israel was conducting an intelligence operation. The five Israelis worked for a moving company with few discernable assets that closed up shop immediately afterward and whose owner fled to Israel. . .

It is rather strange that the US media, with one notable exception, seems to be ignoring what may well prove to be the most explosive story since the 11 September attacks - the alleged break-up of a major Israeli espionage operation in the United States which aimed to infiltrate both the justice and defence departments and which may also have been tracking Al-Qaeda terrorists before the aircraft hijackings took place. . .

The urban myth that refuses to die! Grab the tinfoil.
And the Israelis are long gone, back in Israel, while you still whine. BWAAAAAAAAAA.

Is it just me, or is there a concerted effort in the media these days to tarnish Israel?

I saw the 20/20 piece. And have mixed feelings about what was reported.
I don't like any agents of any country running covert operations in our midst.
But, if this was an operation predicated that the US intelligence establishment
had gone totally impotent under eight years of Clinton/Gore oversight...
personally I would hold that as a mitigating factor.
But I also don't like the idea of Dubya's team letting these folks off the hook
without fuller investigation of exactly what the heck they were doing.

I don't like to consider why there might have been no choice but to spring them.

Couple this modus operandi with the Bush Justice Dept.'s reluctance to investigate the clinton WH and the image emerges of a self-protecting elite operating outside the constraints of law or accountibility.

I fear your assessment could very well be on the mark.
But my faint "hope springs eternal" thought is that maybe Dubya and Co. have
studied the situation and decided this is a "sideshow" for later concern...and
they must concentrate their efforts on dangers from the really threatening parties
(Osama, etc.).
