A month after the U.S. Supreme Court's 5-to-4 decision for George W. Bush in the presidential election, dissenting Justice David Souter met at the Court with a group of prep-school students from Choate. He told them how frustrated he was that he couldn't broker a deal to win over one more justice -- Anthony Kennedy being the obvious candidate. ``If he'd had 'one more day -- one more day,' Souter now told the Choate students, he believed he would have prevailed,'' according to an excerpt of an upcoming book by Newsweek Senior Writer David Kaplan.(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010909/HSSU002 )In the excerpt from ...

He swallowed several nitroglycerin pills, prescribed for a heart condition, and repeatedly slammed himself into the wall, trying to make himself explode.Another guy called 911 with a most peculiar feeling. "I went out to dinner and brought home my leftover pizza," he told the dispatcher. "But I left it in the car, and this morning … it was soggy … It tasted kind of funny, so I went back out to the car and noticed that the antifreeze had spilled onto my pizza. ...

With your indulgence, I've constructed a second letter to the editor regarding embryonic life. Here's my rationale for the letter which follows this short essay. While perusing a FreeRepublic.com thread on Saturday, a Freeper’s extensive scholarship offering (electron 1, thread http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3b99b3ca775c.htm) highlighted the following quote from Margaret Sanger’s early feminist magazine: "If a woman is to free herself effectively, she must make herself absolute mistress of her own body. She must recognize her absolute right … to suppress the germ of life. (The Woman Rebel, circa 1914) That quote struck my brain as having something in common with a recent ...

When does Life Begin? - At Conception, or "14 days later..."? When the discussion on stem-cell research was going strong a couple of weeks ago, I heard a brief comment on the radio concerning when life begins. Some ? genetic researcher/expert... said that life doesn't actually begin at conception/fertilization. He said ... that life begins about 14 days AFTER conception ...??? after there was a ? transfer of genetic material / or genes??...etc... My first thought is, that he is just describing a stage of development... one part of the process of the development and growth of the 'young one' ...

TRENTON, N.J. -- The New Jersey State Police and the manufacturer of new handguns that jammed repeatedly during trooper training have reached an agreement to cancel the purchase of all 3,200 service weapons, state officials said Saturday. The state police had agreed to pay Smith & Wesson Corp. $1,323,000 for the Model 99 9mm sidearms and some magazine cartridges delivered earlier this year to barracks around the state. All but $377,000 was paid, according to Roger Shatzkin, spokesman for the state Department of Law and Public Safety. State police recalled all the pistols in March because about 10 percent of ...

Sunday September 9 11:42 AM ET Clinton Warns on Global Warming SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Former President Clinton warned Australians that global warming could cause some small Pacific nations to disappear beneath the ocean, creating a refugee crisis far worse than the one Australia has faced in the last two weeks. At a hospital fund-raising dinner in Sydney on Saturday, Clinton said hundreds of thousands of people around the world would become refugees if climate change isn't addressed. ``The science is unassailable. If the world keeps growing for the next 50 years warmer as it has for the last decade, ...

On Monday, the United States withdrew its low-level diplomats from the United Nations Conference on Racism. This cancer on the body politic of the world reveals its evil intentions with every passing day. If you had visited the official Internet site of the Conference, you would have found a photo of a stereotypical "Jew" holding a sign saying, "Authentic Jews have always opposed Zionism." This is a lie. Jews are free to hold their own opinions regarding this movement for a national Jewish state. The obvious question is, if Arabs and others are free to have Moslem states, why ...
