Peace plainly not on Arafat agenda July 31, 2001 It's been 10 months since Yasser Arafat launched an undeclared war on Israel. The latest example of his use of any pretext for violence came Sunday as Jews gathered at the Temple Mount to commemorate the destruction of the two ancient temples. Every year a handful of extremist Israelis try to reach the site to lay the cornerstone for a third temple. Israeli police kept the members of the Temple Mount Faithful outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. But that reasonable measure was not enough to stop ...

WASHINGTON, July 31, 2001 AP (CBS) The House rejected all cloning of human embryos Tuesday night, casting Congress' first votes on the divisive ethical issue after a day of emotional debate on science, morality and the definition of life. The Republican-controlled House voted 265-162 in favor of the measure that would set fines of $1 million or more and up to 10 years in prison for violators. The legislation, which still awaits action in the Democratic-led Senate, would make it a federal crime to clone people to produce children or to create embryos for medical research. "This House should ...

I have been lurking for several months at Free Republic and at several liberal sites that I collectively describe as "left-wing hate sites." The right-wing hate sites have Nazis, Neo-Nazis, skinheads and militia groups. The left-wing hate sites have socialists, anarchists and radical Democrats -- and it's hard to tell them apart. The left-wing hate sites each have about eight or ten regular members who talk to each other, reinforcing each other's absolute hatred of Bush and the Republicans. They also have a few other people who wander in and out. Anyone visiting who has an opinion anywhere to the ...

House votes to ban human cloningWASHINGTON (CNN) -- The House of Representatives voted Tuesday to ban all human cloning after rejecting a plan to allow the procedure for research only. The comprehensive ban, backed by the Bush administration, passed on a 265-162 vote Tuesday evening. A competing measure -- which would have banned cloning for reproductive purposes, but allowed it for scientific research -- failed Tuesday afternoon on a 249-178 vote.Rep. Dave Weldon, R-Florida, who sponsored the absolute ban, said his approach is the only way to go. His bill would set penalties of up to 10 years in prison ...

The privileged status of Catholic clergy By Joan Vennochi, Globe Staff, 7/31/2001 BLESS ME, Father, for I have sinned. I was warned more than 10 years before the arrest of Rev. John J. Geoghan that the priest was a suspected serial child molester. After the warning, I sent him to five different parishes, where he contined to prey on children. Make a good confession and God forgives anything, Catholics are taught. Unfortunately for Cardinal Bernard F. Law, absolution does not come so easily in the secular world. Last month, Law confessed - more precisely, admitted in a court document ...

The House voted 265-162 to ban all cloning of human embryos Tuesday after hours of debate that weighed potential scientific benefits against moral principles. The White House praised the vote. "Today's overwhelming and bipartisan House action to prohibit human cloning is a strong ethical statement, which I commend," Bush said in a prepared statement. "We must advance the promise and cause of science, but must do so in a way that honors and respects life." The bill's supporters in the House applauded the vote as a victory for ethics. "This is about providing moral leadership for a watching world," ...

J.C. Watts, R-Okla. "Cloning is an insult to humanity. It is ...

Carter candor Ex-president looks back, around and ahead at the nation and the world Interview by Serajul I. Bhuiyan and Richard Hyatt ---- PLAINS, GA. | The mayor, Boze Godwin, was wearing shorts. Stepping from behind the counter at his drugstore, he asked why I was in Plains. "We have an appointment with Jimmy," I said. "You just missed him. He was over at city hall for a meeting," Godwin said. Locals had met to discuss a Plains improvement plan, and the former leader of the free world had joined them. A few minutes later, cleared by the Secret Service, ...

(Published: Tuesday, July 31, 2001) A good student, Gary Condit. Here is a real student of the infamous Bill Clinton. It seems family doesn't come first in Washington D.C. And I believe the Republicans are just as evil as the Democrats. It seems that this country is really going down the tubes. When family values deteriorate, so does the society at large. I wonder what happened to Chandra Levy; you know Condit knows a lot more than he is telling. It seems that these people make pacts with the devil. Clinton said he never had an affair with that ...

Just bought and listened to the new Judas Priest CD, Demolition. Unlike their previous effort, they do not try to out pummel Pantera on every song. This record is more varied than Jugulator. You will notice I am comparing Demolition to Jugulator because Jugulator is the only other release in the post-Halford period. Jugulator was Ripper Owens' introduction as Rob Halford's replacement. In Demolition, Ripper comes more into his own as a singer. There is not as much of the upper octave vocal theatrics as Jugulator but there are some...and they are killer. Glenn Tipton and KK Downing again provide ...

Amnesty International accused the United States yesterday of "contempt for international law and common standards of decency" for the planned execution this month of a convicted murderer who was a juvenile, aged 17, at the time of his crime. Napoleon Beazley has admitted shooting dead an elderly man in a 1994 car theft. John Luttig, 63, was shot twice in the head in front of his wife at their home in Tyler, Texas. Beazley's bloody footprint was found beside Luttig's body. However, with only a fortnight to go before Beazley is due to die by chemical injection, his lawyers are ...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Two of America's most revered symbols, the Declaration of Independence and the original Star-Spangled Banner, are getting a much-needed rest after decades spent hanging on museum walls. When they go on permanent view again next summer, they'll be lying nearly flat. Meanwhile experts are getting them ready to show for centuries more. The Constitution and its first 10 amendments -- the Bill of Rights -- will have the same treatment. People working on them have two aims: saving the flag and parchments from wear or possible tear, and making them more meaningful to more people -- ...

One thing that both major political parties agree on is using American taxpayer dollars to subsidize left wing, totalitarian regimes around the world. This fact was demonstrated again last week when the House of Representatives voted to continue such foreign aid expenditures via the Export-Import Bank. The price tag for this appropriations bill is $816 million and funds projects such as nuclear power plants in China, General Electric plants in Mexico and a host of other globalistic, corporate welfare programs. In fact, the whole purpose of the Export-Import Bank is to subsidize foreign governments and international corporations doing business ...

A Clear Lake woman accused of drowning her five children in a bathtub was indicted Monday on two charges of capital murder. Shortly after a Harris County grand jury returned the indictments, lawyers for Andrea Pia Yates filed a notice of intent with the 230th State District Court that they plan to mount an insanity defense. One indictment charges Yates with capital murder-multiple murder in the deaths of Noah, 7, and John, 5. The other indictment is a charge of capital murder under 6 years old in the death of Mary, 6 months. State law allows the filing of capital ...

Go figure Can you "kill" something if it's not alive? Rep. Jerrold Nadler, New York Democrat, seems to think so. If not, the congressman might want to clarify his remarks during last week's markup of H.R. 2505 -- the Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2001 when the full House takes up the measure today. Inside the Beltway has obtained a House Judiciary Committee transcript of the markup, held last Tuesday, during which Mr. Nadler broached the ultimate right-to-life question: Is an embryo a human being? "I say no," Mr. Nadler told fellow lawmakers on the committee. "At one point this ...

Chandra Levy has been missing for three months, but her parents haven't given up hope that she is alive.    The 24-year-old Modesto woman vanished May 1, shortly after ending her internship at the Bureau of Prisons in Washington, D.C. Police have scaled back ground searches and have been anything but optimistic about solving the case in recent days.    Even so, Robert Levy dismissed D.C. Metro Police Chief Charles Ramsey's remarks Sunday that the chances of finding out what happened to Chandra Levy are "50-50."    "Just odds," Robert Levy said. "It doesn't mean anything."    And he stopped just short of ...

HotlineScoop.com | Tuesday, July 30, 2001 A Money Vacation By Vaughn Ververs t should come as no surprise that the television news anchor garnering the most attention this summer has been CBS' Dan Rather. After all, big Dan has been consistently colorful, quotable and controversial for the past 20 years, a staple of broadcast news. But while most media gazers have been captivated by Rather's stubborn refusal to cover the Chandra Levy story, another network giant may be having a bigger impact on television news just by disappearing for awhile. Why would one of the three biggest, and arguably ...
