A Bosnian Serb ex-police chief who pleaded guilty to crimes against humanity has been sentenced by the UN war crimes tribunal to 10 years in prison. Stevan Todorovic, 43, admits murdering, torturing and sexually assaulting Muslims and Croats in 1992-93 while chief of police in the Bosnian town of Bosanski Samac. Presiding Judge Patrick Robinson said Todorovic's crimes were "very grave" and the sentence would have been much longer if he had not co-operated with prosecutors. He originally pleaded not guilty in 1998, but reversed the plea last December in a deal with prosecutors. At the same time he ...

Cold Comfort The Washington Post reports that the FBI has concluded that Otis "OC" Thomas was telling the truth when he said he was lying when he said his daughter, then 18, had an affair with Rep. Gary Condit. We've said it before: This is by far the most bizarre subplot in the whole Condit story. What made the Modesto minister's story seem plausible in the absence of corroboration from the daughter (who Thomas said was "in hiding") was that Thomas said he had told Chandra Levy's mother, Susan, of the putative affair in April, before Chandra disappeared, which ...

Deputy DC police Chief Terry Gainer says authorities probably will not administer another law detector test to Representative Gary Condit. Gainer continues to say the congressman "is not the central figure" in the investigation of Chandra Levy's disappearance.Police have interviewed Condit four times, and at one point suggested they may seek their own polygraph in addition to a private one the lawmaker's lawyers turned over to authorities. Police academy cadets have wrapped up their search for clues in the Chandra Levy case. Rep. Martin Frost, the Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, had a major problem. Unions, which contribute significantly the coffers of the DCCC, were demanding to be heard on the issue of President George W. Bush's energy program. By and large they favor it. Frost ended up providing them with a forum to speak to the Democratic Caucus. But he then brought in leading environmentalists to present the opposition to the Bush energy program. As the House of Representatives prepares to vote on the Bush program, it will be interesting to see which group has the greatest influence on ...

s Gary Condit in the clear? Maybe not, but the D.C. police are claiming that they no longer have any interest in administering their own lie-detector test to the slippery California congressman. "I don't think that's going to happen…. I think we're really past the polygraph stage," deputy police chief Terrance Gainer told CNN, adding that "I really think it's important to point out that the congressman, although interesting to a lot of people, is not the central figure in this, nor is his wife." And on a day when police were scaling back their thus-far fruitless searches of ...

ASHINGTON -- Police began scaling back their investigation of Chandra Levy's disappearance, ending an intensive three-week search of woods and abandoned buildings in areas near the federal intern's apartment.
