The deranged firebug accused of igniting the devastating Palisades Fire had become “fixated” on Luigi Mangione in the lead-up to the deadly blaze — and then allegedly suggested the inferno was started out of “resentment of the rich,” prosecutors said. Jonathan Rinderknecht, 30, was obsessed with the accused health care CEO killer and had routinely searched “free Luigi Mangione” and “lets take down all the billionaires” online, court documents show. In the weeks and hours before allegedly sparking the blaze that triggered the catastrophic Palisades Fire, Rinderknecht — who worked as an Uber driver — ranted to customers about Mangione’s...

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against The New York Times on Tuesday, claiming that the paper had engaged in “unlawful employment practices” and had discriminated against a white male employee who did not get a sought-after promotion. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, says The Times’s “stated race and sex-based representation goals influenced the decision not to advance” the man’s candidacy for a deputy real estate editor role in 2025. “The New York Times categorically rejects the politically motivated allegations brought by the Trump administration’s E.E.O.C.,”...

The attorney general’s office has ruled against Southwick’s adoption of a temporary moratorium on building large-scale solar arrays and battery energy storage systems in town, which means companies can now apply for a permit to install those systems. “If a company puts in an application, we’d have to move forward through our current process and hear it within 60 days,” said Town Planner Alvin Allen about the ruling. The Southwick Planning Board began discussing the idea of having a zoning bylaw drafted to place a moratorium on them in late December. Those discussions came after Blandford and Westfield residents successfully...

Caution: I don't know about the neutrality of the source. But reports are that thousands of IRGC and Basij members have defected, some to neighboring countries (Armenia, Turkey, Azerbeijan) and others within Iran. Note: To my knowledge, while IRGC is a full-blown military force with it's own "navy" and "air force," and is tasked with border security and extra-territorial action throughout the world, the Basij started as volunteer militia for border defense, but in peacetime, is tasked with suppression of popular uprising.

WASHINGTON, May 5 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republicans are seeking to give $1 billion in taxpayer funding to the Secret Service this year for security upgrades, including the White House ballroom. President Donald Trump has said private donations would pay for the estimated $400 million ballroom project. The funding package text does not say how much of the new Secret Service funds will pay for the ballroom. The proposed infusion of Secret Service funds was released late Monday as part of a nearly $72 billion package to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection through 2029 on...

Butter is having a moment. No longer just a bit player in baking or a back-of-fridge standby, it’s taking center stage — whipped into sculptural boards, swirled into pastas, slathered generously on crusty bread. And yet, most of us still toss the same familiar yellow box into our grocery carts week after week. What actually makes a butter “better,” and which store-bought slabs are worth the splurge? To find out, we talked to chefs, cheesemongers and cookbook authors obsessed with butter — not just for the flavor, but for the science and soul behind it. We asked about butter for...

Copilot said Here’s a clear, scholarly, and surprisingly fascinating look at the little word “is” in the New Testament — and whether the Greek ever means “represents.” No tools were needed here; this is straight linguistic and exegetical analysis. 6. The Conclusion When you synthesize these passages, the result is unmistakable: • Jesus teaches a literal Eucharist (John 6). • Jesus gives a literal Eucharist (John 13). • Paul interprets a literal Eucharist (1 Cor 10–11). • The early Church universally accepts a literal Eucharist. The symbolic only interpretation simply does not fit the grammar, the narrative, the theology, or the...

[Catholic Caucus] Synod report suggests homosexual ‘relationships’ may not be sinfulThe Final Report from Synod on Synodality Study Group 9 uses personal testimonies to question the sinful nature of homosexuality and suggests debate on same-sex ‘marriage’ remains unresolved.A report from the Vatican’s General Secretariat of the Synod published Tuesday suggests a reframing of homosexuality, endorsing testimony without qualification that “sin, at its root, does not consist in the (same-sex) couple relationship” but in “a lack of faith in a God who desires our fulfilment.”The Vatican-commissioned Study Group 9 of the Synod on Synodality published its Final Report May 5, “Theological...

The Justice Department announced Tuesday that it has filed a lawsuit against the city of Denver, Colorado, "alleging that the City unconstitutionally bans certain constitutionally protected semi-automatic rifles." "These laws unconstitutionally infringe on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms in common use for lawful purposes," according to the Justice Department. "The Constitution is not a suggestion and the Second Amendment is not a second-class right," Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement. "Denver's ban on commonly owned semi-automatic rifles directly violates the right to bear arms. This Department of Justice will vigorously...
