WASHINGTON, May 5 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republicans are seeking to give $1 billion in taxpayer funding to the Secret Service this year for security upgrades, including the White House ballroom.
President Donald Trump has said private donations would pay for the estimated $400 million ballroom project. The funding package text does not say how much of the new Secret Service funds will pay for the ballroom.
The proposed infusion of Secret Service funds was released late Monday as part of a nearly $72 billion package to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection through 2029 on a party-line vote.
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs
Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the Republican chair of the Judiciary Committee, blamed Democrats for the historic government shutdown, casting them in a statement as "the party of open borders and 'defund the police.'" Grassley said his panel will "help provide certainty for federal law enforcement and safer streets for American families."
Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, the top Democrat on the judiciary panel, said Republicans are going outside the traditional appropriations process to fund unpopular policies through the end of Trump's presidency because they are in danger of losing control of Congress in November's midterm elections. He also highlighted a contrast between the parties as Democrats campaign on affordability.
"While Americans are struggling to make ends meet as a result of President Trump’s failed policies, Republicans are focused on providing tens of billions of dollars for the president’s vanity ballroom project and cruel mass deportation campaign," Durbin said in a statement.

"The funding package text does not say how much of the new Secret Service funds will pay for the ballroom."
So the whole hoax about his seeking an extra $400 million for the ballroom was false. This just looks like necessary security upgrades and Congressional authorization for construction.
It gives the Congress a chance to earmark some pork for the midterms...................
Yesterday was May the fourth, which put me in mind of recent displays of Secret Service marksmanship which put me in mind of Imperial Stormtroopers’ marksmanship.
Perhaps some of that money could go for training, dog-handling and personal behavior.
(I admit that I’m far on the outside when it comes to these things and willingly admit that I’m completely off-base).
Liberal sources are using the headline of 1 billion for the ball room.
Add to that I would imagine it's cheaper to secure an event in the ballroom than it is to secure an event off site in some flipping hotel where crazies check in and run around in the hallway toting guns.
Now they can afford ladders to search nearby rooftops.
Republicans are so stupid. Leave the ballroom out of the bill. It’s supposed to be privately funded.
misleading headline.
Pass the Save America Act.
Nah, this way there is no court case to fight. Lefties cost the country a billion extra because of their silly lawsuits. Less than they usually cost the country.
Republicans in Congress — including Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul — launched new efforts Monday to approve and pay for President Donald Trump’s proposed ballroom at the White House, arguing that it would help avert security breaches like the shooting at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.
I think the scenario of drone swarms launched from vehicles and drone capabilities of more powerful explosive loads and independent target searching is causing a lot of rethinking of a lot of things, White House events, the security available in the Oval Office, presidential visits to public venues, there must be a huge amount of new threat concerns among the thinkers on executive branch security.

Of course they are. Someone here even posted the headline from the rat a-holes at the Daily Beast.
I hope I’m not breaking any rules by quoting from a Newsmax article-but I wanted to post this for the TDS whiners and others equating the funding of security to prevent assassination of our president and others with “pork”, or wasting their money, etc. The ballroom is still mostly privately funded, as before. As per Newsmax: GOP Bill Funds Security for White House Ballroom-
“The $72 billion Senate reconciliation bill includes funding for security measures connected to President Donald Trump’s new White House ballroom.
The provision, tucked into a broader GOP-led package focused primarily on immigration enforcement, would allocate $1 billion to the U.S. Secret Service for “security adjustments and upgrades” tied to the East Wing modernization project.
(snip)
Republicans say the funding is strictly for security enhancements, not construction, and is aimed at strengthening protections for the president, his family, and White House personnel.
The funds could be used for above-ground and underground features, including hardened infrastructure and potentially expanded protective facilities. (snip)
“This does not fund ballroom construction,” a spokesperson for Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, emphasized, noting the money is designated solely for Secret Service needs, Politico reported.” (snip)...
Even liberal Polutico reports that...
I would love to see more articles from Newsmax and the other non-TDS sites for a better balance of opinions/discussion-just my dos centavos...
They have to replace the one arrested for choking his chicken in a hotel hallway.
