This carved relief from Nimrud, a major city of the ancient Assyrian Empire in present-day Iraq, regularly drifts around the internet as purported evidence for scuba diving nearly 3,000 years ago. But the wall panel actually depicts an army crossing a river, and soldiers are navigating the waves with the help of ancient flotation devices. The gypsum panel is one of several excavated in the 1840s from the Northwest Palace, which was built on the Tigris River around 865 B.C. on the orders of King Ashurnasirpal II. Originally located around the interior walls of the throne room and royal apartments, the...

This gold helmet, painstakingly decorated to look like the wavy hairdo and ears of its wearer, was found in 1927 by British archaeologist Sir Leonard Woolley during excavations at Ur, an ancient city in Mesopotamia that is now part of Iraq. The artifact was recovered from a tomb in the Royal Cemetery along with alabaster vases, gold daggers and golden bowls -- one of which listed the name Meskalamdug, meaning "hero of the good land." But since the tomb was not as big or as richly furnished as other royal tombs, Woolley suggested the deceased was probably a prince rather than...

Once again, Democrat Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania who suffered a stroke, is coming off as one of the most sensible members of his party. As Zohran Mamdani rises in the polls for the New York City mayoral race, Fetterman called people in his party ‘morons’ for accepting the ideology of socialism. He even talks about meeting a person from a socialist country who warned him about the evils of that economic system. Breitbart News reports:

A federal judge on Tuesday night blocked President Donald Trump from firing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook as her lawsuit challenging her termination plays out in court. Judge Jia Cobb’s issuance of a temporary restraining order in the case came nearly two weeks after Cook sued Trump to prevent him from removing her from the central bank. "The public interest in Federal Reserve independence weighs in favor of Cook’s reinstatement,” Cobb wrote in an opinion on her decision Tuesday. Cobb’s order enjoins Fed Chairman Jerome Powell and the Board of Governors “from effectuating in any manner” Cook’s removal because of...

Hundreds of people queued for hours in Bristol in the hope of joining an NHS dentist. Lodge Causeway Dental Centre, in Fishponds, recently recruited three new dentists, which meant it could take on an additional 3,000 patients. People queued from the early hours of the morning on Saturday 6 September, with many saying it is a struggle to find affordable dental treatment in the South West. One man queuing told ITV News West Country: "I was up at about half past five this morning to get an NHS dentist. I've been trying for the last two years to get an...

The living memory of World War II is passing away. In April, the oldest known survivor of Pearl Harbor died at 106 years old. A few weeks ago, a 102-year old veteran who stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day (June 6, 1944) entered his eternal reward. Sadly, less than one percent of the war’s veterans are still alive. However, more troubling and dark, the increasing deaths of witnesses — those who endured the conflict and its horrors — has been coupled with the rise of revisionist ahistorical conspiracies about the Second World War. Worse, this is increasingly a right-wing...

In July, 2024, a group of Chinese technologists and researchers met at an office in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang region, to discuss efforts to stop internet users bypassing the Great Firewall, China’s vast online censorship and surveillance apparatus. Even by Chinese standards, internet controls in Xinjiang are intense, a legacy of a years-long crackdown by the authorities targeting Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities. Preventing people from dodging these controls – to access banned websites or download secure messaging apps – was a key government priority, part of a “long-term struggle and technical confrontation” vital to nationwide “anti-terrorism” efforts, according...

In the last few days the horrific stabbing death of Iryna Zarutska by oft-arrested offender Decarlos Brown, Jr. on a Charlotte, NC, commuter train finally broke into the national conversation. National media — aside from this newspaper — studiously ignored the heinous Aug. 22 attack, while Wikipedia’s editors did their best to airbrush it. Why? Because they run interference for Democrats, and the story is political nitroglycerine. Not only did this brutal murder of a white woman by a black man turn the Democrats’ racial narrative on its head, it underscored and boosted President Donald Trump’s messaging on urban crime....

When Bashar al-Assad’s dictatorial regime collapsed in late 2024, Beijing lost a familiar ally in Damascus. For more than a decade, China had backed Assad under the banner of sovereignty and...

India's oil demand is likely to outpace China's this year, according to Trafigura Group. The prediction was made by Chief Economist Saad Rahim during an event hosted by S&P Global Commodity Insights on Monday. He said that "this year, Indian demand is set to outstrip China's if you exclude strategic stockpiling." Market dynamics Role in global demand growth India and China, the region's top crude importers, are major contributors to demand growth. The two countries are at the center of how producers and traders adapt to economic changes and the rise of renewable energy. India's growth is fueled by urbanization...
