Radiation therapy can promote the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) ligand amphiregulin, which increases growth of existing metastases in patients with advanced solid tumors, according to a study. András Piffkó, M.D. and colleagues explored the potentially deleterious effect of radiation in promoting metastasis in patients with advanced solid tumors who received stereotactic body radiotherapy to multiple metastatic sites. Gene expression was examined in 22 matched preradiotherapy and postradiotherapy biopsies for irradiated metastases. The researchers found that the EGFR ligand amphiregulin was induced by radiotherapy in tumor cells; amphiregulin reprograms EGFR-expressing myeloid cells toward an immunosuppressive phenotype and can reduce phagocytosis....
  • Osteoporosis treatment could benefit people older than 80

People who are older than 80 should be considered for osteoporosis treatment after a fracture to avoid further risk, according to a study. "The burden of osteoporosis is rising as the global population ages rapidly," said Gianina Flocco, M.D. "Our study supports the initiation of osteoporosis treatment after a fracture in people older than 80 years, as it has been shown to decrease both hospitalization and mortality." Flocco and colleagues used the TriNextX health research database to study 88,676 patients aged 80 and older who suffered a fracture due to bone deterioration or weakness caused by osteoporosis. The patients were...
  • High blood sugar may have a negative impact on men's sexual health

Metabolic health factors, including small increases in blood sugar, are the main drivers of change in the reproductive systems and sexual functioning of aging men, according to a study. "Although age and testosterone levels have long been considered an impetus for men's declining sexual health, our research indicates that these changes more closely correlate with modest increases in blood sugar and other metabolic changes," said Michael Zitzmann, M.D., Ph.D. "This means that men can take steps to preserve or revive their reproductive health with lifestyle choices and appropriate medical interventions." These conclusions follow a long-term study of healthy men (without...

Skydance Media needs the approval of President Donald Trump’s Federal Communications Commission in order to take over Paramount Global. It’s now promising to root out “bias” at CBS News in order to get it. In a pair of letters filed Tuesday with the FCC, Skydance committed to a post-merger “comprehensive review of CBS,” including a promise to install an ombudsman to evaluate complaints of “bias or other concerns” at the news network and report their findings to the new Paramount’s president. Skydance also committed to eliminating Paramount’s diversity, equity and inclusion practices at the entertainment giant once it takes over....
  • How Does Billy Joel Feel About His Heavy Metal Past?

Imagine if Billy Joel had joined Deep Purple instead of writing "Piano Man." In a sense, that's what happened when he formed his ill-fated heavy metal band Attila in 1969. He and collaborator Jon Small had already been in another band together, the Hassles. Though the Long Island group had scored a deal with United Artists Records, after two unsuccessful albums in 1967 and 1969, Small and Joel were frustrated. The pair felt that they were more serious about music than their bandmates. They decided to break away and move in a different direction. Where Did the Idea for Attila...

Steam preservationist and entrepreneur Ross Rowland passed away on July 19 following a brief battle with cancer. He was 85 years old. Rowland made his money in the commodity trading market, but his true passion was steam railroading, and in the 1960s and 1970s, he was responsible for some of the biggest steam-powered spectacles of the preservation era. Through his High Iron Company, he operated excursions across the Northeast and Midwest using an eclectic fleet of steam locomotives, including Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 759, Reading Company 4-8-4 2101, and Canadian Pacific G5 4-6-2s Nos. 1238, 1278, and 1286. Military tribunals in the United States are designed to try members of enemy forces during wartime, typically those designated as unlawful enemy combatants, and operate outside conventional criminal and civil proceedings. They are distinct from courts-martial, which apply to U.S. military personnel under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). As a former president and commander-in-chief, Barack Obama is no longer an active military officer, but he was subject to the UCMJ during his tenure, as the commander-in-chief holds a unique position within the military structure.Theoretically, a former president could be subject to a military tribunal for actions taken while...

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday said President Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order is unconstitutional. In a 2-1 ruling, the appeals court upheld a nationwide injunction against Trump’s order. The three-judge panel included: Majority: Judge Gould (Clinton), Judge Hawkins (Clinton) – Dissent: Judge Bumatay (Trump). “The district court correctly concluded that the Executive Order’s proposed interpretation, denying citizenship to many persons born in the United States, is unconstitutional. We fully agree,” the majority wrote.

…“Newspaper culture lost its conviction as it became aware of its own dimunition (sic),” Jack Shafer writes, “Yesterday’s journalists thought the world revolved around what their newspaper wrote. Today’s journalists resign themselves to the fact that their copy simply doesn’t matter as much.” Ouch. … Just for fun, I decided to ask GPT directly and simply: “Why did newspapers die?” “Newspapers declined primarily due to the rise of digital media, which fundamentally altered how people consume news. With internet accessibility, readers shifted to instant, free, and personalized content available online. Advertisers followed this migration, diverting revenue streams to platforms like...

Another day, another leak. CNN and The Washington Post on Wednesday reported that sources say the Pentagon Inspector General has ‘evidence’ that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s Signal chat included classified information from Central Command. The Pentagon Inspector General expanded his investigation into Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s use of the double-encrypted app Signal in May. Steven Stebbins took over as Acting Inspector General after President Trump fired the previous IG and 17 other inspectors general. Stebbins was first appointed to his position in 2015. Pete Hegseth has been under heavy attack since before his confirmation hearing and the leaks keep coming....

Following a day of talks focused on domestic issues, such as bail reform and health transfers, Canada’s premiers are wrapping up their three-day gathering in Muskoka presenting a united front in the ever-looming threat of U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war. “We can walk and chew gum at the same time,” New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt said during a post-meeting press conference. “What’s happened is that the pressing threats that Donald Trump has made to our economy have meant that instead of occupying all of our meetings and squeezing out conversations about bail reform and immigration, we’ve been meeting a...

Columbia University will pay $200 million to resolve allegations that it discriminated against Jewish students, in exchange for the restoration of federal grants worth hundreds of millions of dollars. “While Columbia does not admit to wrongdoing with this resolution agreement, the institution’s leaders have recognized, repeatedly, that Jewish students and faculty have experienced painful, unacceptable incidents, and that reform was and is needed,” the university said in a statement announcing that it had reached a deal with the federal government. In addition to a cash settlement, Columbia University will also implement a series of reforms announced earlier this year. In...
