…“Newspaper culture lost its conviction as it became aware of its own dimunition (sic),” Jack Shafer writes, “Yesterday’s journalists thought the world revolved around what their newspaper wrote. Today’s journalists resign themselves to the fact that their copy simply doesn’t matter as much.”
Ouch.
…
Just for fun, I decided to ask GPT directly and simply:
“Why did newspapers die?”
“Newspapers declined primarily due to the rise of digital media, which fundamentally altered how people consume news. With internet accessibility, readers shifted to instant, free, and personalized content available online. Advertisers followed this migration, diverting revenue streams to platforms like Google and Facebook that offer targeted ads, undermining traditional newspapers' financial viability. Additionally, social media empowered direct engagement and rapid dissemination of information, challenging newspapers’ slower publication cycles. Paywalls introduced to recapture revenue often discouraged readership, while cost-cutting measures reduced journalism quality, accelerating audience loss. The younger demographic, preferring multimedia formats over print, further eroded newspapers' subscriber base. Lastly, mobile technology enhanced convenience, allowing users to access news instantly and conveniently, making printed newspapers less attractive….”
….
Decades ago, he explained, he was a young reporter covering news in Connecticut. He talks about a boat ride that he took with a source, looking at how land around a power plant would be vulnerable to development through deregulation and the sale of utility land parcels.
…
Fast forward to today, and we really don’t have those capabilities anymore, at least not in the same ways. There’s no one to ring the bell, to respond to the bat-signal, and the tools that journalists and editors and newsrooms have used are largely ineffective now.
…
…So in a sense, the power of artificial intelligence has replaced manual, deliberate and painstaking journalism with collective digital searches that don’t always return the right result.

Their “honest and upstanding” disguise was shredded. Their bias was as great as their rejection of being biased.
Today, we have millions of “citizen journalists” who report, can be fact-checked, corrected/flamed if wrong, all in real-time. They don’t hold a monopoly.
So the writer AND ChatGPT are wrong.
AI doesnt make the same mistakes. Also AI can’t replicate the liberal bias and liberal superiority complexes very well.
Lol, I had to laugh… How would anybody know the difference?
Oh, wait… I know… The AI generated news feed would likely be more accurate!
But if AI can make up legal cases for lawyers, why can’t AI make up stories for journalism?
“ Today, we have millions of “citizen journalists” who report, can be fact-checked, corrected/flamed if wrong, all in real-time. They don’t hold a monopoly.”
True.
But the millions of people are also posting a lot of garbage.
GOOD journalists are very valuable.
AI can do just as good of a job making up crud as journalists.
I would say that “Grok 4” is probably a more qualified/accurate journalist than half the recent journalism grads out there!
Maybe an editor would help, John...
What? AI cannot lie?!
It depends on what you mean by ‘lie’.
It can provide false information, sure.
Garbage in.....garbage out.
When they make up cases for lawyers, they can also make up the case law precedents.
Journalist is a name that marks the decline of a once honored profession, that of Reporter. Sad really.
The way some of the journalists write I figured they were already replaced by AI.
To a point.
As much as I love FR, there is a ton of garbage posted here. Slay News is the bottom-feeder of “new conservative media” Gateway Pundit is right up there, too. And randos on Twitter et al shouldn’t be trusted blindly because they’re on “our side.”
Vigilance requires fact-checking and verification. Often, Slay’s nonsense is debunked in less than 5 min of fact checking. Other sources may require more effort. But it is always satisfying to prove or debunk an article, and that helps build your own personal list of trusted and ghastly sources.
Now, there are MAYBE a few “reporters” who I “trust.” Kurt Schlichter is one. Daniel Greenfield Is another. But I still validate their stories. YMMV,
And a journalist would never lie about such things. Honest!
Agenda-driven DNC talking points long ago replaced most journalism and few DNC stooges have acknowledged any difference.
Its true. AI can use many more words than “bombshell”.
