  • Bing Crosby show and communism

This is interesting. This is a 1954 radio show. At the 17:30 mark they discuss socialism, communism, collectivism, fascism, free enterprise, and government enterprise. It’s a very different conversation than would be had today. It’s also interesting to consider why they would do this on such a show. In 1954, the McCarthy hearings took place, Vietnam split into communist north and republican south, and the Soviets began launching large ICBMs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeSIgMDlxL4

Hey, MSNBC, are you hiring? I ask because I can write your story on this for you. Here you go, this one’s on the house: “The Trump White House’s shameful removal of 4,000 foreign students from the country is yet another blot on the record of this administration, which in just 100 days has proven to be a legal, political and moral disaster. Selfless and hard-working intellectuals of color from non-racist countries potentially sacrificed their future to grace this systemically racist, xenophobic, paranoid nation with their presence, only to be unceremoniously expelled by a white supremacist megalomaniac who is threatening...

We just covered how Fannie Mae fully dismantled its ESG team and program. Now it appears that Freddie Mac has followed suit. Freddie Mac’s main ESG (environmental, social, and governance) webpage and a recent ESG-related article have been taken down from the website... When we first reported on ESG policies for the Fortune 100 in early April, all 100 companies had an active ESG policy... With Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac dismantling their teams, that number is now at 98. Will this move trigger a cascade of similar changes?

Russia has rejected a Ukraine war peace deal proposed by Donald Trump, the US president, because it does not grant international recognition to territory seized by Moscow’s troops.Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, also suggested the plan did not satisfy the Kremlin’s demands to oust Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, and limit the size of Kyiv’s armed forces. The rejection came as Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, offered a temporary, 72-hour truce next month to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.

USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul recently seized more than $12 million in drugs in the Caribbean Sea, an example of how Littoral Combat Ships have found their niche with counternarcotics missions. The oft-maligned Littoral Combat Ship, or LCS, may have found its true calling: chasing down smugglers. USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul, a Freedom-variant LCS, recently stopped two suspected drug smuggling operations within 72 hours “through a combination of air and surface operations” while deployed to the Caribbean, according to the Navy. A Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment that is embarked aboard the ship and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 50, Detachment Three helped the...

Truckers are celebrating President Donald Trump’s decision to restore enforcement of a rule that excludes foreign truckers from the roads if they cannot read English-language signs and instructions. “They’re celebrating … Everybody’s excited, they’re happy,” said Shannon Everett, a cofounder of American Truckers United. who explained the truckers’ problems to Breitbart News in March. The change is set by an executive order to be signed by Trump on Monday. The order tells Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy “to ensure drivers violating English proficiency rules are placed out-of-service, enhancing roadway safety,” and directs him to revamp other aspects of the trucking industry....

The quartet were missing the warmth of Los Angeles, but turned that into a gold-certified classic.By the spring of 1966, the Mamas and the Papas were big news in the United States. They’d gone Top 5 with “California Dreamin’’’, released the previous December 8, and were climbing fast with the follow-up, ‘Monday, Monday.’ That was on its way to a three-week stint at No.1 in the US when, on the chart for April 28, the vocal quartet appeared on a British chart for the first time. “California Dreamin’’’ made a tentative first showing in the Top 50 that week at...

Before entering the NFL, he would prefer a ring and a trip to Canton than resetting the market at the position. The San Francisco 49ers value character. That was something John Lynch said he coveted during his introductory press conference as the 49ers' general manager. While there has been a rare player who doesn’t fit that profile, it’s safe to say the 49ers made sure they didn’t get bad apples. If you want character in the 49ers’ first-round selection from the 2025 NFL Draft, this Mykel Williams quote should make you feel better. We have gone through offseason after offseason of...

Evan Richardson grew up in Silicon Valley, surrounded by big tech companies that transformed how people live, socialize and work.As a curious kid, Richardson took apart electronics and put them back together. A career in technology seemed like a natural and safe path after his service in the military.“Tech was always an industry you go into, you’re going to make a lot of money and you’re never going to get fired,” he said. For thousands of tech workers like Richardson, those days are over. While the memo didn't strictly forbid “fun” it did attempt to ban dominos, cards, and video game tournaments before the Army made an about-face last week. ... The Army has canceled a memo that would have directed a defense contractor to cease providing ping-pong and other “recreational activities other than sports and fitness” for soldiers at Camp Arifjan and Camp Buehring, Kuwait, said Lt. Col. Christina Wright, a spokeswoman for U.S. Army Central Command. “All activities remain in place,” Wright told Task & Purpose on Monday, in response to a query about the letter of technical direction, or LOTD. “The...

The new head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division is dramatically reshaping the office to propel President Donald Trump’s social agenda, prompting the departure of about half of the division’s lawyers in recent weeks, according to people familiar with the situation and public statements from top officials. Since being sworn in this month, civil rights director Harmeet K. Dhillon has redirected her staff to focus on combating antisemitism, anti-Christian bias, the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports, and what Trump and his allies have described as Democrat’s “woke ideology.” The division changed mission statements across its sections to...

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) argued that the Biden administration should simply ignore a judicial decision she dissented from during an appearance on CNN in 2023. Vice President JD Vance’s comments about the role of the judiciary have been the subject of much consternation from Democrats in recent days. In reference to a series of court decisions blocking the Trump administration’s, Vance mused on social media that “If a judge tried to tell a general how to conduct a military operation, that would be illegal. If a judge tried to command the attorney general in how to use her discretion as...

Hundreds of lawyers and other staff members are leaving the Justice Department’s civil rights division, as veterans of the office say they have been driven out by Trump administration officials who want to drop its traditional work to aggressively pursue cases against the Ivy League, other schools and liberal cities. The wave of departures has only accelerated in recent days, as the administration reopened its “deferred resignation program,” which would allow employees to resign but continue to be paid for a period of time. The offer, for those who work in the division, expires on Monday. More than 100 lawyers are...
