Merck to invest $1 billion in new Delaware plant to boost US manufacturing

U.S. drugmaker Merck (MRK.N), said on Tuesday it is investing $1 billion in a new Delaware plant to expand domestic production as it prepares to deal with President Donald Trump's tariffs.

The new facility will produce biologic drugs and Keytruda, becoming Merck's first in-house U.S. site to make the blockbuster cancer treatment, the company said.

Merck said last week its biggest tariff exposure is through Keytruda and it has enough U.S. inventory for this year. It estimated $200 million in additional costs for the levies implemented to date.

The company expects labs at the new facility to be fully operational by 2028 and produce experimental drugs by 2030. The new plant would create at least 500 full-time jobs and about 4,000 construction vacancies, the company said. Merck opened a $1 billion facility at its North Carolina site last month to boost U.S. production.

The Trump administration has been putting pressure on U.S. drugmakers to move their medicine production to the country and announced probes into drug imports that set the stage for levies in the sector.

U.S. drugmakers, including Eli Lilly (LLY.N), and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N), have recently announced additional investments to boost domestic production amid the tariff threat.

Do these jobs require no ‘thinking’? My retired ass is good for 20 hours/wk. Methinks there’s a lot of us out there ready, willing and able to step forward. No need for benefits. They may very well need us when the not-so wetbacks are gone.

New Jersey used to be the center of American dug manufacturing before our political and corporate geniuses decided it was better to outsource it all to China and India.

Deep blue Delaware is a poor choice for any new business but I think Merck already owns some property here and would get the Democrats to kiss their a—. The same Delaware Democrats who are screaming about Trump and his “economy killing” tariffs.

As was Puerto Rico before Clinton changed the tax codes to make it less profitable.

It’s cheap to buy Senators in the small states. That’s why credit card companies open call centers there.

Shouldn’t even be a state, take all of these tiny states that aren’t even as big as a county in Texas and combine them into one state.

Almost all the Big Pharma Corps are headquartered in NJ.

Lots of US manufacturing was done in Puerto Rico.

My son works for a big Pharma corp in MA.
At a manufacturing facility.
NOT Pfizer

My hometown. All the lab chemicals in the high school were from Merck. Some really strange ones, too.
