Walgreens said Tuesday it plans to close 1,200 stores over the next three years as it seeks to further downsize its footprint amid flagging sales and changing consumer behavior. The pharmacy chain said 500 of the closings would occur over the next 12 months. It estimates a quarter of its 8,700 stores in the U.S. are unprofitable. Walgreens announced the closures as part of its fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year earnings, which beat Wall Street's expectations. In a statement, CEO Tim Wentworth acknowledged the company was in the midst of a "turnaround" that would "take time." "We are confident it will...

TOCKHOLM (AP) — Two pioneers of artificial intelligence — John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton — won the Nobel Prize in physics Tuesday for helping create the building blocks of machine learning that is revolutionizing the way we work and live but also creates new threats for humanity. Hinton, who is known as the godfather of artificial intelligence, is a citizen of Canada and Britain who works at the University of Toronto, and Hopfield is an American working at Princeton. “These two gentlemen were really the pioneers,” said Nobel physics committee member Mark Pearce. The artificial neural networks — interconnected computer...

Three immigrants to America have won the 2024 Nobel Prize in economics, illustrating continued contributions by immigrants to the United States. The three immigrants—one from Turkey and two from the United Kingdom—are affiliated with U.S. universities. Immigrants have been awarded 38%, or 45 of 117, of the Nobel Prizes won by Americans in chemistry, medicine and physics since 2000, according to an analysis by the National Foundation for American Policy (updated through the 2024 awards). Immigrants also have been awarded 31% (24 of 78) of the Nobel Prizes won by Americans in economics, including 28% since 2000. The 2024 Award...

Politicians and activists repeating platitudes in support of the transgender agenda have become accustomed to going unchallenged. Their casual endorsement of sex change procedures on minors has resulted in scores of children having their genitals mutilated, other parts of their bodies surgically disfigured, and their fertility extinguished before they even reach adulthood. At best, these children become lifelong consumers of the services offered to them by the same medical industry that brutalized them. Too often and too late to reverse them, they regret the “choices” they made and are forced to reconcile themselves to a body which the adults in...

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded Friday to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organization of survivors of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for its activism against nuclear weapons. Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said the award was made as the “taboo against the use of nuclear weapon is under pressure.” He said the Nobel committee “wishes to honor all survivors who, despite physical suffering and painful memories, have chosen to use their costly experience to cultivate hope and engagement for peace.” Efforts to eradicate nuclear weapons have been honored in the past by the...

Florida's recent back-to-back hurricanes, Helene and Milton, revealed the stark contrast between "real" and "fake" politics and jobs. Florida has been battered by back-to-back hurricanes. First, Hurricane Helene snuck up on us just a few weeks ago. Those living on Florida’s West Coast first thought we were saved when it veered towards the less populated panhandle. But, while it avoided a direct hit upon the Tampa-Saint Petersburg area, it sent an enormous storm surge our way, which led to flooding in low-lying areas. Helene did even more damage in North Carolina, where rainfall and the local geography combined to create...

There have been several recent news stories about the low participation of Christians in elections. According to one, more than 100 million “people of faith” choose not to vote, including 40 million plus professed Christians. There are multiple reasons cited for this low participation. Many say Christians are uninterested in politics. Others will say that they find all candidates unworthy of their vote. Since there was never any opportunity for early Christians to vote, the New Testament is silent on this issue. Many Christians believe that God is in control of all things and that voting is not even necessary. A sovereign...

Vice President Kamala Harris unveiled an “Opportunity Agenda” proposal for Black men Monday, which includes plans to provide 1 million forgivable loans to Black entrepreneurs and new pathways to help Black Americans succeed in the legalized marijuana industry. *** Harris’ announcement is aimed at increasing her support among Black male voters, and comes in the final weeks of an extremely close race between the Democratic vice president and Republican former President Donald Trump. The plan outlined Monday would provide 1 million fully forgivable loans of up to $20,000 to Black entrepreneurs and others to start a business. When individuals bury themselves deeply in an echo chamber for a prolonged period of time, they begin to assume that not only their world but the entire world is the echo chamber. This is probably what happened to those who greenlit the hateful anti-Trump propaganda picture, The Apprentice.Trump-hating studio executives were approached by Trump-hating filmmakers and the project was instantly approved. Everyone they know is a rabid and baseless Trump-hater, so they assume that each of these individuals will be a willing and eager viewer. They probably thought at the very least the film would become a sensation in liberal...

Disturbing bodycam video captured the moment a towering 6-foot-tall woman was fatally shot by a veteran Virginia cop just seconds after she charged at him with a knife and repeatedly slashed him. Sydney Wilson, 33, was fatally shot by Fairfax County officer Peter Liu in the hall of her apartment building in Reston, just outside Washington D.C., on Sept. 16 after cops were called to carry out a welfare check on her, police said. The graphic footage, released by police on Monday, showed an “agitated” Wilson opening and then abruptly slamming her door in the officer’s face after he knocked...

Katie had it yesterday: Kamala Harris might have plagiarized good chunks of her book, Smart on Crime. This goes beyond the recent plagiarism scandals that have rocked elite higher education institutions. It’s one thing not to cite someone else’s work. It’s another when you copy and paste entire sections of Wikipedia, which the vice president is accused of. And I thought Joe Biden lifting Neil Kinnock’s speech during his 1988 campaign was bad. This is even more egregious. The New York Times tried to run interference. It failed. Christopher Rufo, who had the scoop, had the receipts: Kamala’s publisher seems...

On September 27, 2024, Federal District Court Judge Michael T. Liburdi rendered a decision in American Encore v. Adrian Fontes that weaponized algorithms surreptitiously embedded in various state boards of elections official voter registration database, turning them into a tool to block elections that bear the modus operandi of mail-in ballot election fraud from being certified. In his decision, Judge Liburdi referenced a provision in the Elections Procedures Manual (EPM) that Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, a Democrat, had issued. That provision required the Secretary of State to certify an election by excluding the votes of any county that refused...

On Oct. 2, 2024, a reader sent me the following that was written by Christine Drag (author and Co-Founder of jerusalemchannel.tv):Are we not near to the calling up of believers and the beginning of the Great Tribulation? The signs of the times are screaming at us that soon the great shofar of God will sound. Some of the signs that caused Darg to say this are:Israel is at war.Israel has been attacked by Iran (a Gog and Magog foe).Hurricane Helene has caused mayhem in the USA.The world is trying to deal with biological warfare and plagues. There is worldwide apostasy and persecution of...

From Our Special Correspondent. HEADQUARTERS, ARMY OF THE JAMES, Wednesday Evening, Oct. 12, 1864. There is a fair prospect, as I write, that Gen. BUTLER will be forced to make retaliation upon the rebels for the way in which they are alleged to be treating our colored soldiers who were captured in our advance on the 29th ult. From deserters who came into camp this morning, Gen. BUTLER learned that a large number of the negro troops had lately been brought from the prisons at Richmond, and put to labor on the various fortifications in front of us. Justly indignant...

Forget the stylishly dressed wannabe president’s hot air photo op about protecting the U.S. border from the illegal invasion. She may have impressed the know-nothing reporters. but the people on the front lines protecting our borders—the border patrol personnel—aren’t fooled. They know who really cares about protecting our country from this totally illegal invasion and—oh, what not a surprise—it isn’t the current vice president, Kamala Harris who has done nothing but incentivize illegal crossings for the past four years. Publicly stating who really appreciates the valor of the border patrol agents protecting the U.S., the National Border Patrol Council, the...

Betting markets are lining up to show former President Donald Trump with a winning lead over Kamala Harris in the 2024 race for the White House. The Republican currently has a -145 line on BetOnline, compared to Harris’s +125. A negative line means that bookmakers believe the odds favor that person to win, the Independent notes. Other sites show a similar shift to Trump over his Democratic rival with 20 days to go until polling. Fox News reports after favoring Harris for two straight months, traders on PredictIt have now flipped for Trump, mirroring other betting markets that show the...
