For all the talk we've heard about the critical nature of early voting, you might be tempted to believe that the election is all but over already. Republican analysts have frequently blamed Donald Trump's loss in 2020 on the reluctance of traditionally conservative voters to vote early or by mail, claiming that they then had to play "catch up" on election day. The party stressed the need to overcome that reluctance and get their own voters to the polls in advance. Meanwhile, the Democrats continued their push going door to door, registering voters, and directing them to early voting locations.Something...

There's something of a truism in American elections that in states that allow early voting, Democrats are more prone to vote early, while Republicans are more prone to vote on the traditional election day. These opportunities vary from state to state, and we can argue whether this is or is not a good practice, but we can take that up at another time. Alaska, by the way, does allow early voting, but the early voting station is 30 miles away and in the rip-roaring big city of Wasilla, so we're passing; we'll vote on November 5th at our little local...

The galaxy NGC 1549, seen 700 million years after the Big Bang. Credit: JADES Collaboration =================================================================== Scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope have spotted an ‘inside-out’ galaxy that formed around 13 billion years ago. Like a large city, the galaxy has its densest collection of stars at its core. However, that density decreases as one moves from the city center to the galactic ‘suburbs,’ giving the galaxy its inside-out shape. Although scientists have seen similarly shaped galaxies form in the last 10 million years, the unique ability of the JWST to peer billions of years back in time has...

In 2001, digital cameras were a rare commodity. They were expensive, bulky and captured images that were inferior to the organic look of film. After you downloaded and edited those whopping 3.1 megapixel images, you had very few options of where you could publish them online. Remember when Shutterfly and Snapfish were a thing? Contrast that to today where you have people shooting magazine covers on cell phones and uploading over 500,000 images to Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook every minute. We don’t hear about national tragedies on the news anymore, we read about them in our Twitter and Facebook...

A heated election debate has erupted in Kentucky as voters clash over a ballot amendment that bars 'idiots and insane persons' from voting. Despite the recent uproar, the phrase actually already exists in the state's constitution and the rule has been in place for decades. However, its mention in the recent amendment has brought the state's prohibition of 'idiots and insane people' from voting back into the spotlight for everyone who was unaware that the controversial language was already in place. Democratic Sen. Reggie Thomas from Lexington said referring to 'idiots and insane people' as groups of people prohibited to...

While millions of people in Florida fled Hurricane Milton, Mike Smalls Jr ventured into the violent winds in Tampa, Florida, holding a blow-up mattress, an umbrella and a pack of ramen noodles. He went outside Wednesday evening as the storm pounded the US state and livestreamed on the platform Kick. He told his online audience if he reached 10,000 views, he would launch himself and his mattress into the water. Once he hit the threshold, he took the plunge. Then he got worried: “The wind started picking up and I don’t know how to swim…so I had to grab on...

For days, residents of Florida's Gulf Coast were warned to evacuate as Hurricane Milton approached - less than two weeks after the south-eastern US was thrashed by Hurricane Helene. But from her home in Tampa, squarely in the path of the coming storm, Chynna Perkins decided to stay. By Thursday morning, she said she, her husband Sterling and their pets had weathered the storm but lost power. As the storm came and went, Perkins talked the BBC through her situation with a series of voice notes and calls, describing how Milton barrelled through her neighbourhood of West Tampa. Her decision...

ILLEGAL FIREARM? Did Tim Walz violate state and/or federal law by using a magazine that was too large? It sure sounded like he loaded five shells into his shotgun. Tim's handmade Italian shotgun can hold 4 shells in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. Bird hunters know that you've got to use a plug to limit the capacity of your shotgun to 2 shells in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. Did Tim forget about this rule or is the truth that he has no idea what he is doing. The press pool on the hunt reported that...

It is a reflection of the great fear by the Arizona Republic that Kari Lake could be elected U.S. Senator from Arizona that their azcentral.com website published an astonishing 15 hit pieces on her in the two day period of October 9-10.Such desperation on the part of the Arizona Republic could have been inspired by Lake's debate performance against her opponent, Congressman Ruben Gallego, on Wednesday. He had already dodged one debate against Lake which was barely mentioned at azcentral and after the favorable reviews of Lake during their one and only debate, it is easy to understand his reluctance...

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) issued an apology after posting a video appearing to mock the sacrament of the Eucharist, noting that she “would never do something to denigrate someone’s faith.” In a statement provided to Fox2 Detroit by Whitmer’s office, the governor explained that the video, in which she can be seen wearing a Harris-Walz camouflage hat and placing a Dorito chip on the tongue of Canadian author and journalist Liz Plank, was “supposed to be a video about the importance of the CHIPS Act to Michigan jobs.” “Over 25 years in public service, I would never do something...

Former President Barack Obama this week hit the campaign trail for Vice President Kamala Harris, part of a concerted effort to rally support around the Democratic presidential nominee with less than a month remaining before the election. Obama has long been known for his soaring oratory, which helped propel him to the White House in 2008. That year, Obama's diverse voting coalition was headlined by overwhelming support from Black and young voters, two groups that Harris needs to win in November. But Obama's remarks while in Pittsburgh on Thursday sparked a major debate about Black voters and their loyalty to...

It’s straight out of a comic book: a shot of liquid silk quickly hardens into a sticky, strong fiber that can lift objects 80 times heavier. Sound familiar? Researchers have described the Spider-Man-inspired tech in a new study. A newly-created web-like material will make many people who read comics as kids (or adults) very happy. Spider-Man is officially a step closer to existing in real life. Sure, we’re not at the swinging-from-building-to-building stage yet, but it feels like it’s not too far off. In a new study, a team of researchers from Tufts University’s Silklab, whose goal is to reimagine...

A food bank in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has come under scrutiny for only providing food to people who are black and indigenous, telling white residents not to take advantage of its resources. Mykela ‘Keiko’ Jackson launched the Food Trap Project using a Minnesota state grant. The project was intended to help poor residents in need of food who live near the Sanctuary Covenant Church in North Minneapolis. According to the Daily Mail, the pantry was open as of July 27 but was forced to close and relocate just months after opening when Jackson tried to prevent white people from obtaining food....

This pro-Tim Walz ad is so horrifically bad that my first thought was, it must be a parody. But it is said to have been produced by the same people who made this one, which is real and to which the Walz ad bears some resemblance. So on balance, I think it is another misguided attempt by the Democrats to make their candidates seem human: Brent Sher on X: If you thought that ad of the men for Kamala was cringe, wait until you see the same group's Tim Walz video
