The Republican-led House returns Monday to Capitol Hill with just 25 scheduled legislative days left before the November elections to obtain the audio tapes of Justice Department special counsel Robert Hur's 2023 interview with President Biden regarding his mishandling of classified documents. The House GOP has the transcript of the five-hour interview but has offered several arguments on why it wants the tapes – including that the federal criminal investigation ended this year with no charges against Biden in part because Hur concluded a jury would likely view the president as a “sympathetic, well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory.”

We have seen how quickly Western governments will use every ‘emergency’ to dispatch basic civil liberties. We also know what’s coming. Battered conservative syndrome is real! We have gotten clobbered over the head so many times during the last decade that we’re almost numb to the pain. Even worse, we’ve been conditioned to accept each new blow as if we somehow deserved it more than the last. We do not. We have seen how quickly Western governments will use every “emergency” to dispatch basic civil liberties. We have watched American political operatives rig elections with mail-in-ballot fraud. We have endured...

Larry Chavis is clinical professor of strategy and entrepreneurship at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC. He has taught there for 18 years on a renewable contract. He has now been told that his contract will not be renewed this year. The university has apparently acted in a totally legal way, but Chavis and his supporters are upset: Because of his long service, which seemed to promise some job security. Because a few of his lectures were apparently recorded, by built-in security camera. This arrangement is also apparently legal, though it seems tacky. As far as I know, the faculty...

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is seeking to reset relations at home and abroad. During a visit Sunday to Edinburgh, that he billed as an “immediate reset” with the regional governments of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, Starmer said he would also seek to improve the U.K.'s “botched” trade deal with the European Union. “I do think that we can get a much better deal than the botched deal that (former Prime Minister) Boris Johnson saddled the U.K. with,” he said in reference to the pact negotiated after Brexit. Jane F. McAlevey, a fierce labor organizer and scholar who trained tens of thousands of workers across the globe in strategies for taking charge of and shaping their unions, died on Sunday at her cabin in Muir Beach, Calif. She was 59. Her stepbrother Mitchell Rotbert said the cause was multiple myeloma. Ms. McAlevey (pronounced MACK-a-leevee) dedicated her life to increasing working class power. She believed that worker-driven unions — led from the bottom up rather from the top down — were the most effective engines to combat economic inequality. In her writings, including for The Nation, as what the...

Staffers for President Biden provide him instructions with large print and photos of venue interiors and his planned path of entry ahead of events the 81-year-old commander-in-chief attends, according to a report. Documents obtained by Axios on Sunday show how staff help guide Biden – including his specific path to a podium – when he appears at functions. The report comes as the Democrat faces relentless questions about whether he is fit for the Oval Office after an awful debate performance last month against presumptive GOP opponent, former President Donald Trump. “It surprised me that a seasoned political pro like...

Democrats trying to dislodge Joe Biden will first have to combat the proxy commander in chief: Hunter Biden — and that’s easier said than done. With the Biden family digging in behind Joe staying put, any staffers or party grandees deputized to strong-arm Joe Biden out of being their candidate in November had better not underestimate the first son. While the focus has been on four-time Vogue cover girl Jill Biden and her screeching assurances that Joe is hale and hearty and fit for another four years, the first son has flown under the radar. But Hunter is glued to...

Archaeologists have carried out new excavations at the site of the ship that was carrying one of the world’s oldest scientific instruments among its valuable cargo of marble sculptures, ceramic vessels, and other items from the east to Greece, according to a statement released by the Swiss School of Archaeology in Greece (ESAG). The most extraordinary discovery the underwater team made was a portion of the ship’s hull preserved in excellent condition still in its original position from when the vessel sank in the first century B.C. “This allows us to better understand the ship’s construction characteristics that had remained...
