U.S. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump exchanged foreign policy views on Russia's war against Ukraine during the first presidential debate of the 2024 U.S. election in Atlanta, Georgia on June 27. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, boasted that he could easily bring about a settlement between Kyiv and Moscow and criticized President Volodymyr Zelensky, while Biden maintained support for ongoing military aid to Ukraine and a strong NATO. "I will have that war settled between (Russian leader Vladimir) Putin and Zelensky as president-elect. Before I take office on Jan. 20, I'll have that war settled," Trump claimed...

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre acknowledged Friday that President Joe Biden is having trouble speaking and debating, abandoning the claim that such accusations were based on edited videos, or “cheap fakes.” Jean-Pierre was briefing reporters on Air Force One en route to New York after the president’s disastrous first presidential debate on Thursday evening, when he appeared confused and frightened, and slurred his speech at times. Biden acknowledged his problems in remarks to a rally Friday in North Carolina, saying that he can still perform as president even though he cannot walk or speak as well as he used...

KYIV — As U.S. presidential hopefuls Joe Biden and Donald Trump hashed it out on screen, a lot was on the line for us. Though he may be tired and old, Biden is still more a predictable figure for Ukrainians, as he supports providing aid to Kyiv that helps us stand against the Kremlin. The glaring question is what to expect from Trump, who treats Russia’s war against us like dispute between two kids that should settle down. It was a glimmer of hope when Trump called Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ultimatum for Kyiv to give up for regions and...

Former President Barack Obama admitted that Joe Biden’s debate performance Thursday night was “bad” — but still urged voters to back his former veep over Donald Trump. “Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know,” Obama, 62, wrote on X Friday afternoon. “But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself,” Obama insisted. “Between someone who tells the truth; who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own...

The Supreme Court denied Friday former Trump advisor Steve Bannon’s request to stay out of jail pending his appeal. Bannon will now be required to report to prison by July 1, as a federal judge ordered him to do earlier this month. He will serve a four-month sentence for his contempt of Congress conviction, which stems from his decision to ignore a subpoena from the Jan. 6 committee. {snip} Bannon is expected to serve his sentence at a prison in Danbury, Connecticut, that has housed violent offenders, rather than a minimum-security prison camp.

Gavin Newsom will be the first Democrat in more than a century to succeed another Democrat as governor and the succession also marks a big generational transition in California politics. A long-dominant geriatric quartet from the San Francisco Bay Area – Gov. Jerry Brown, Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi – has been slowly ceding power to younger political strivers. Moreover, Newsom is succeeding someone who could be considered his quasi-uncle, since his inauguration continues the decades-long saga of four San Francisco families intertwined by blood, by marriage, by money, by culture and, of course,...

One White House official says group text chats are “abysmal… everyone is deflated” in the wake of President Joe Biden’s debate performance, including jokes about updating resumes. Many staff are working from home or didn’t go into the office today, the official said. “We’re all already commiserating. No reason to do it at a desk,” the official told CNN.

The biggest concern for the US Air Force is if takes over 15 years to build its full order of even just 100 B-21 Raiders then the new stealth bomber could be outdated before the last get made. Technology is increasing at a rapid rate. Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, quantum computers, autonomous systems, etc. – are evolving constantly, and many of the current platforms could likely be obsolete by the time the platforms reach full-rate production (FRP). Autonomous wingman drones could be made faster, at lower cost which would enable a constantly updated fleet. Despite secrecy and security measures,...

Severe thunderstorms moved through the Cape Krusenstern National Monument, 500 miles northwest of Fairbanks, Alaska, Thursday morning with lightning, high winds, small hail and a shelf cloud worthy of a storm in the Plains. A powerful area of low pressure swirling just north of the Aleutian Islands on Thursday aided in pumping warm and humid air well up into northern Alaska, AccuWeather Regional Expert Brandon Buckingham said. "As the warm air clashed with cooler air to the north, powerful thunderstorms featuring wind gusts over 50 miles per hour and hail up to 1 inch in diameter prompted the National Weather...

Surfers at Santa Cruz’s Cowell Beach are used to sharing the ocean with wildlife. On occasion, they’ve been chased by aggressive otters, and white shark numbers are on the rise in an adjacent cove. On the morning of June 24, though, a far more enigmatic and elusive creature made an appearance, and gave the surfers a bit of a scare. In a photo captured by Santa Cruz resident Eric Mendelson from a nearby bluff, the creature’s dorsal fin is sticking out of the water, looking decidedly shark-like. But in another remarkable photo, Mendelson captured the animal’s bizarrely shaped head and...

CV NEWS FEED // A Tennessee senator and a Nashville attorney are suing Tennessee over the recent abortion trafficking law, which criminalizes adults who help obtain abortions for minors without their parents’ permission. According to the Associated Press, the law would punish any adult who “intentionally recruits, harbors, or transports” a minor to get an abortion without their parents’ consent.
