Consuming ultra-processed foods (UPFs) is on the rise globally, leading to a displacement of healthy diets, according to Professor Carlos Monteiro of the University of Sao Paulo.
Monteiro, who coined the term “ultra-processed food,” will address the International Congress on Obesity this week, highlighting the dangers UPFs pose to both children and adults.
Consumption of UPF’s is growing
This stark warning comes as consumption of UPFs, including sugary cereals, processed meats, instant noodles, and sugary drinks, skyrockets worldwide. In countries like the UK and US, these convenient yet unhealthy options now make up over half of the average person’s diet. For some demographics, particularly younger people, low-income earners, and those in disadvantaged areas, UPFs can comprise a staggering 80 per cent of their daily intake.
The dangers of UPFs are not new. A major study published in February linked them to a multitude of health problems, including an increased risk of heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and even mental health issues and premature death.
Professor Monteiro plans to unveil his concerns at the conference, arguing that food companies purposefully exploit consumers’ desire for convenience and affordability by making UPFs more appealing than fresh, home-cooked meals.
Processed foods are dominating many diets
This news raises concerns about the global food landscape and the potential long-term health consequences of a diet dominated by ultra-processed options.
Ping
For the last 10,000 years the problem was consuming adequate calories. Now the problem is this.
In the long past, even the little food one might get was still healthy and nutritious. Now there’s no real Food in a lot of ‘food’ that people eat.
A big part of it is so-called ‘convenience’, and that people don’t have - or take - the time to cook at home anymore.
Leave me alone!!!
We have been warned about highly processed foods for the last 60 years. So many food fads over those years I am surprised I am still here and kicking!
One example of Ultra Processed Foods is when you take a potato, and smash it into very small pieces, and then cook it with water and salt, or even worse, butter. Each of these processing steps transforms the healthy potato into a poisonous cauldron of death.
Oh good grief. Car makers try to make cars more appealing than public transportation. AirBnB tries to make their rentals more appealing than hotels. Lawn care companies try to make paying the to mow your lawn more appealing than doing it yourself. Sick of "experts" always demanding we let them save us from ourselves. It's all part of the deterioration of the American independent spirit.
Are they including fake meat and bugs?
If you want to live a long time eat Organic food but people before us(thousands of years) always ate organic food and their life expectancy was only 30-40,years ,LOL
We were on other animals menus.
Well if you are too lazy to cook and too stupid to follaw a recipe...
Ah, yes, some deva harping on about how the peasants need food.
“What, can’t they eat healthy foods like I do at the regular WEF meetings?”
Just outlaw the processed foods and let the peasants starve — a win/win.
Makes me wanna get some deep fried pickles.
