truth should triumph over nationalistic narratives. And the truth about Thanksgiving should be learned by all Americans, as it is a part of our complicated history of savage betrayal and removal of indigenous people and the colonization of their land. The actual date for the first Thanksgiving is somewhat disputed. Most put the first Thanksgiving in 1621, when the Pilgrims had a feast with the Wampanoag, an Indigenous Nation in and around Plymouth. Scholars say "Thanksgiving" is a misnomer, since the Pilgrims would have given thanks by fasting and "quiet contemplation." It would have been referred to as a "Rejoicing."...

Below is my column in The Hill on how Disney appears to be honoring the 300th anniversary of Adam Smith by recognizing some basic economic principles like the need to sell goods to make profits. Here is the column: This year marks the 300th anniversary of Adam Smith, the iconic figure behind the theory of free markets, or of what we have since come to call “capitalism.” Born in June 1723, Smith went on to explain how the “invisible hand” of the market worked as people exercised their choices between certain products. It can shape economies and challenge whole governments....

Notorious gambler and Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is calling it quits on gambling — again. We’ll see how long that lasts. For at least the third time, Portnoy frustratingly quit and posted on X that he is hanging up his betting account and going gambling-free. “I quit gambling. Expletive Buffalo,” Portnoy tweeted. He claimed to have a “monster bet” on the Bills, and was furious with the referees as well as Buffalo’s sporadic play late in the game as it blew multiple leads. “Ref show in Philly. Goodell took the Eagles. #nflrigged,” Portnoy posted after the Eagles were not...

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey is reportedly at risk of losing his $40 million sponsorship deal with Weet-Bix, an Australian cereal brand by the Sanitarium Health Food Company, amid the NBA investigation into allegations of Giddey having an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl. The 21-year-old Aussie has been removed from the company’s social media accounts, according to Code Sports. A spokesperson for Sanitarium said the company is aware of the situation, but said it had yet to cut ties with Giddey. “We are obviously aware of news surrounding Josh Giddey and are waiting for facts to be confirmed,”...

CHICAGO — A man who has been sentenced to prison 14 times, including 12 times for burglary, is now charged with burglarizing a CVS in the West Loop. But, even though he is on parole for four burglaries, the state did not revoke his parole, and a judge set him free to await trial. Back in March 2020, a minister detained Mack Triplett after catching the serial burglar red-handed as he broke into a church on the Near West Side, according to a CPD report. Police said he admitted to breaking into the church so he could steal from its...

People who voted for Brexit tended to be less clever, new research shows, in findings that also shed light on the appeal of EU populists, such as Dutch politician Geert Wilders. Some 73% of people in the smartest top 10% of the British population voted to stay in the EU back in 2016, according to a fresh study by the University of Bath in the UK. Just 40% of those at the other end of the spectrum (the least-smart 10%) voted to remain. And even in couples — where people had a similar age, education, income-level, and cultural background —...

A fitting Word of the Year from Merriam-Webster, which reflects one of 2023's main issues: distinguishing between "real" and "fake"... The Word of the Year reflects the preoccupations of the time... And in an age of post-truth, ChatGPT, and deepfakes run amok, the line between “real” and “fake” has become increasingly blurred. How fitting then that US publishing company Merriam-Webster have elected the word of the year for 2023 as “authentic.” According to Merriam-Webster, “authentic” has a number of meanings including “not false or imitation,” a synonym of real and actual; and also “true to one’s own personality, spirit, or...

Former New Jersey governor and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie appeared to excuse antisemitism as a natural reaction to the “intolerant” rhetoric and actions of his main rival, current frontrunner former President Donald Trump. As Breitbart News reported:Anchor Dana Bash said, “I want to ask about the spike in hate against Jews in the United States. You told The New York Times that you believe Trump has contributed to this.” Christie said, “When you show intolerance towards everyone, which is what he does, you give permission as a leader for others to have their intolerance come out. Intolerance towards...

On this date in 602 (although some sources prefer November 23, but that’s close enough for ancient history) the 20-year reign of Byzantine Emperor Maurice came to a most unpleasant conclusion. No gangster of love, Maurice made his bones (and other bones) as a military commander in a running war with the Sassanids unproductively engaged by the forgettable successors of Justinian. So successful was the progress of his arms that Emperor Tiberius II Constantine married his daughter to Maurice and set him up as the official heir, a sage expedient considering that Roman commanders had once been known to take...

Pope Francis postponed a series of meetings because of a lung inflammation and breathing difficulties, the Vatican said Monday morning. Matteo Bruni, director of the Vatican press office, said in an emailed statement that a CT scan ruled out pneumonia but added that doctors had inserted a cannula to provide antibiotics. The pope lost part of a lung following an illness some 50 years ago. Francis, the first pope from the Americas, turns 87 next month and has battled ill health for years, canceling multiple engagements and appearing in public in a wheelchair. But Bruni's statement stressed: "The Pope’s condition...

I don’t think the House of Mouse can read the room. Months after people showed their dissatisfaction with the new Snow White’s direction, they’re now reportedly working on a Hercules remake. According to Inside The Magic, Disney wants to cast Marvel star Michael B. Jordan as the Greek demigod. The outlet has stated that this news is unconfirmed, but given how Disney has turned into a rage-baiting machine by swapping out redheads with POC (rather than creating new stories for them), I wouldn’t be surprised if Jordan does get cast as Hercules. However, the rumor mill is already rampant on...

As we watch the news from half a world away, we suffer the usual dearth of information where sensitive negotiations are concerned: We want to know which of the hostages is finally being set free, almost 7 months past October 7, and we want to know what kind of criminals Israel has to release in order to win their freedom. Euphemisms play a role in this coverage, as we need to read between the lines, and remember the cultural differences between the rose-colored-glasses view of the world that we Americans often adopt in foreign policy, and the reality of a...

CBS‘ Late Show will be on an unplanned post-Thanksgiving hiatus after host Stephen Colbert says he is recovering after surgery for a ruptured appendix. Colbert shared the news on Instagram’s Threads service. “Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week,” the statement begins. “I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’ Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix. I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas.”

Alberta's United Conservative government has invoked its controversial Sovereignty Act for the first time by introducing a resolution to push back against the federal government's proposed Clean Electricity Regulations. The resolution, tabled in the Alberta legislature Monday, instructs governments and provincial entities such as the Alberta Electric System Operator and the Alberta Utilities Commission to ignore the regulations when they come into force "to the extent legally permission." The resolution also raises the possibility of Alberta setting up a Crown corporation to protect the private sector companies that provide electricity in the province. The Clean Electricity Regulations, currently in draft...
